E.J. Bellocq : Storyville portraits : photographs from the New Orleans red-light district, circa 1912 by E. J Bellocq( Book )

12 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 722 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"E. J. Bellocq's photographs of Storyville prostitutes became famous in 1970, when they were shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Bellocq was more or less unknown before that, but with the show and the accompanying book, his mysterious, hauntingly beautiful portraits reached a wide audience, and Bellocq became a celebrated figure in the history of photography." "The Storyville portraits, which were made around 1912, constitute the only work of Bellocq's that is known to have survived. Eighty-nine glass plates were found some years after his death, and were eventually bought by the American photographer Lee Friedlander, who printed them for the show and book sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art. The book has long been out of print, and for this new edition Friedlander has expanded the number of images from thirty-four to fifty-two, and they have been reproduced in a larger format, the size of the glass plates themselves. The text from the original edition by John Szarkowski, the former director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, is reprinted here. It is based on interviews Friedlander conducted with people who knew Bellocq - a fellow photographer, several musicians, a writer, and a former prostitute who was one of Bellocq's subjects."--Jacket

The desert seen by Lee Friedlander( Book )

8 editions published in 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Landscape photography may soothe or disturb; beckon one to forbidden corners of the world or remind us of those spaces only memory recalls. Award-winning photographer Lee Friedlander knows how to evoke such complex responses even when, as in The Desert Seen, the landscape is as strange and impenetrable as that of the Sonora Desert. Here cacti as expansive and preposterous as oceanic fauna are photographed with the reverence befitting nature's craftsmanship. Accompanied by a gentle but probing essay written by Friedlander especially for this book, the 94 magnificent tritone reproductions are an event for desert enthusiasts and photography connoisseurs alike

The model wife by Arthur Ollman( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 268 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With provocative photographs by some of the best-known photographers of the past century, The Model Wife is a striking and original book about the place where marriage and photography converge. Friends, lovers, confidantes, collaborators -- the multifaceted relationship between husband and wife takes on another dimension when the couple are also artist and muse. In The Model Wife, Arthur Ollman explores the imagery and photographic history of nine twentieth-century photographers who portrayed their wives over a period of years. He delves into issues of marriage itself and the powerful influences that such a partnership can have on artistic production. Comparisons between the couples and the resulting photographs enrich this discussion."--
Arrivals & departures : the airport pictures of Garry Winogrand by Garry Winogrand( Book )

15 editions published between 2002 and 2005 in English and Italian and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

If Garry Winogrand photographed everything, all the time, as he is famous for having done, his pictures of airports convey the many still very familiar sights and spaces and sensations attached to air travel. Arriving at an airport, checking baggage, watching other travelers amble, walk and sometimes rush by, luggage trailing and flailing and neatly rolling along, passengers waiting forever on those long rows of attached seats, friends and relatives greeting each other and saying goodbye: everything that happened and stills happens in these vast public spaces. Winogrand's airport photographs were taken over a period of 25 years, with the first frame shot around 1958 and the last in 1983, just months before his death. In Winogrand's archive at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona in Tucson, there are hundreds of contact sheets containing airport images, and over 1,100 prints of airplanes and airports that Winogrand made during his lifetime. Edited by Alex Harris, one of the first to publish selections from this body of work, in DoubleTakemagazine in 1996, and longtime friend and colleague Lee Friedlander, The Airport Pictures of Garry Winograndassembles 86 of the photographer's most compelling, never-before published images of travelers, flight attendants, airport waiting rooms, airplanes on runways and all the people and places in between
Playing for the benefit of the band : New Orleans music culture by Lee Friedlander( Book )

10 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 234 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lee Friedlander first visited the birthplace of jazz in 1957 and immediately set about photographing the aging pioneers of the art form. His love of the music and the people of New Orleans drew him back to the city, and the relationships he formed over time gave him intimate access to a scene that forged one of America's most original artistic traditions. A revised and expanded edition of his 1992 monograph 'The Jazz People of New Orleans', 'Playing for the Benefit of the Band' features over 200 photographs taken by Friedlander between 1957 and 1982, many of which are published here for the first time. Storied figures such as Duke Ellington and Mahalia Jackson have been captured by Friedlander's disarming lens, and Sweet Emma Barrett, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Johnny St. Cyr, and other luminaries are seen in their homes and the back rooms in which they gathered to play. Also included are photographs of the city's second-line parades, whose jubilant dancing has long been a defining aspect of New Orleans jazz culture

Apples and olives by Lee Friedlander( Book )

7 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The master photographer best known for his extensive, insightful documentation of "the American social landscape"--from jazz musicians to factory hands to New York pedestrians and office workers zoning out at their keyboards--has recently been spending more time looking at the literal, natural landscape. His monumental 2005 MoMA retrospective showed, for the first time, a new series of landscapes made in the American West, while for Olives and Apples, he has looked back over the last decade's work and culled a forest, tree by tree. His docile subjects, apple trees photographed in New York State and olive trees photographed in France, Italy and Spain from 1997-2004, are presented in circumstances ranging from sunny, leafy summer health to glittering winter ice-storm glory. Some of the most striking compositions are shot from just inside the reach of a tree's furthest twigs, so that expanding branching limbs fill the frame, stretching out around the viewer

Lee Friedlander : the little screens by Saul Anton( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lee Friedlander's 'The Little Screens' first appeared as a 1963 photo-essay in Harper's Bazaar, with commentary by Walker Evans. Six untitled photographs show television screens broadcasting eerily glowing images of faces and figures into unoccupied rooms in homes and motels across America. As distinctive a portrait of an era as Robert Frank's 'The Americans', 'The Little Screens' grew in number and was not brought together in its entirety until a 2001 exhibition at the Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco. Friedlander (b. 1934) is known for his use of surfaces and reflections--from storefront windows to landscapes viewed through car windshields -- to present a pointed view of American life. The photographs that make up The Little Screens represent an early example of this photographic strategy, offering the narrative of a peripatetic photographer moving through the landscape of 1960s America that was in thrall to a new medium. In this astute study, Saul Anton argues that The Little Screens marked the historical intersection of modern art and photography at the moment when television came into its own as the dominant medium of mass culture
