For Yves R. Simon, philosophy has an affinity to science, not in the sense that philosophy is a mere metascience, a commentary on the sciences, but rather because it shares the same aim as science: the search for explanation. The philosophy Simon espouses is philosophical realism which, following Jacques Maritain, he prefers to call critical realism. Against the prejudice that only some version of philosophical idealism, be it critical or absolute, is capable of understanding positive science. Simon, in Foresight and Knowledge, develops a philosophy of science from a realistic perspective. Philosophy of science or the critique of science, as it was known in France, is, according to Simon, metaphysics in the exercise of its critical function. Simon selects as the central focus of the treatise the problem of determinism, causality, and chance. Simon shows that the concept "determinism" must be understood in different conceptual systems, such as a philosophy of nature and physics; in the latter, determinism is conceived as a possibility of certain and exact prediction

Freedom and community by Yves R Simon( Book )

18 editions published between 1968 and 2001 in English and held by 616 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When Professor Yves R. Simon came to the United States just before World War II, he had lived through the disturbing period in France when democratic government had foundered in feebleness and ineptitude; he had been appalled by the Ethiopian War and the violation of rational moral standards that, on that occasion, was condoned by European intellectuals and politicians. After his emigration to this country, the developments in Nazi-occupied France deeply pained him. All of this deeply personal experience brought home to him the conviction that "both unrestricted liberty and boundless authority are fictitious concepts. Each of them implies its own negation together with the annihilation of society . . . The essential question for every social group is that of combining rightly the forces of authority and liberty."" "The theory of liberty here propounded by Simon, along with his analysis of authority, democracy, and practical wisdom, contains the elements of a political philosophy that can provide direction to other contemporary political theorists of our times. While the latter have gathered great masses of political facts, they have lacked a normative set of ideas that can make these facts meaningful and useful to political society."--BOOK JACKET

The great dialogue of nature and space by Yves R Simon( Book )

"In this work, Yves R. Simon discusses the basic insights of the creators of modern thought: Descartes, Newton, Galileo, Comte, Mach, Meyerson, Bergson, Planck, and the issues at stake in the development of modern science and in the rejection of the Aristotelian physics." "Simon distinguishes between a philosophy of nature and a science of nature - and grants a real value to both. A discussion of this vexing problem and its applications to the modern controversy over determinism and chance raised by modern physics rounds out this philosophical and historical highlighting of man's most important theories of nature."--Jacket

A critique of moral knowledge by Yves R Simon( Book )

"This is the first English-language edition of Yves R. Simon's first book, Critique de la connaissance morale, which was originally published in 1934. Not only does this work clarify the first stages of Simon's intellectual career, it is also a fundamental contribution to moral philosophy." "A Critique of Moral Knowledge addresses a number of issues in a fundamental set of problems: How does moral knowledge differ from other practicial knowledge? What is the primary analog of moral knowledge? What is the controlled range of meanings of moral knowledge? What is the relationship between the moral sense (Simon's term for synderesis), moral philosophy, and the cognition embedded in action? Is politics part of moral philosophy or a neutral technique?" "This translation will be of value to all who are interested in tracking the work of this influential thinker, and will be an important contribution to the twentieth-century conversation on philosophy, politics, religion, and ethics."--Jacket
