No stable metarhodopsin II was measured at alkaline pH. Microspectrophotometric measurements of fresh rhabdoms of the North Atlantic euphausiid Meganyctiphanes norvegica show that its rhodopsin has a (lamda) max at approximately 488 nm, which is very similar to the rhodopsin of E.superba in a 2% digitonin extract. Short wavelength irradiation photoconverts the rhodopsin of M. norvegica to a mixture of rhodopsin and metarhodopsin I similar to that observed for E.superba rhodopsin in extracts. Accessory pigments in the eyes of E.superba include large amounts of the following compounds: the C(,40) carotenoid astaxanthin ((lamda) max = 490 nm), a purple ommin with a (lamda) max at approximately 520 nm, and a xanthommatin-like ommochrome which is photosensitive and bleaches maximally at 440 nm when solubilized in digitonin. It appears that previous reports on the (lamda) max of euphausiid rhodopsins have been in error because of xanthommatin contamination of rhodopsin extracts
