Era hijo del sexto señor de los chichimecas y de la princesa mexica Matlalcihuatzin, hija del rey azteca Huitzilíhuitl, segundo señor de Tenochtitlán. Al nacer, fue llamado Acolmiztli pero más tarde se cambió el nombre por el de Nezahualcóyotl que significa ""coyote que ayuna"". A los dieciséis años, se enfrentó a la invasión tepaneca, encabezada por Tezozómoc, señor de Azcapotzalco. Nezahualcóyotl escapó y se fue a Tlaxcala.
