The introduction by Tolan (pp. ix-lvii) relates that Petrus Alfonsi's polemic against Judaism became famous and authoritative. His books, widely read and quoted, were an important instrument in the struggle against Judaism during the Middle Ages. He tried to demonstrate that only Christendom was in harmony with the principles of reason, that Jewish tradition had a heretical character, being a deviation from the original laws written in the Bible. He focused his attacks on the Talmud and on rabbinical literature in general, criticizing their lack of scientific knowledge. He believed that through argumentation and reason it was possible to convince Jews to renounce their religion. During the 13th century the Dominicans carried out their missionary work based on his points of view
