"[The first] ten chapters...are an efficient, accessible, and self-contained introduction to affine algebraic groups over an algebraically closed field. The author includes exercises and the book is certainly usable by graduate students as a text or for self-study...the author [has a] student-friendly style… [The following] seven chapters... would also be a good introduction to rationality issues for algebraic groups. A number of results from the literature…appear for the first time in a text." –Mathematical Reviews (Review of the Second Edition) "This book is a completely new version of the first edition. The aim of the old book was to present the theory of linear algebraic groups over an algebraically closed field. Reading that book, many people entered the research field of linear algebraic groups. The present book has a wider scope. Its aim is to treat the theory of linear algebraic groups over arbitrary fields. Again, the author keeps the treatment of prerequisites self-contained. The material of the first ten chapters covers the contents of the old book, but the arrangement is somewhat different and there are additions, such as the basic facts about algebraic varieties and algebraic groups over a ground field, as well as an elementary treatment of Tannaka's theorem. These chapters can serve as a text for an introductory course on linear algebraic groups. The last seven chapters are new. They deal with algebraic groups over arbitrary fields. Some of the material has not been dealt with before in other texts, such as Rosenlicht's results about solvable groups in Chapter 14, the theorem of Borel and Tits on the conjugacy over the ground field of maximal split tori in an arbitrary linear algebraic group in Chapter 15, and the Tits classification of simple groups over a ground field in Chapter 17. The book includes many exercises and a subject index." –Zentralblatt Math (Review of the Second Edition)

14 editions published in 1987 in English and Undetermined and held by 454 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From 1-4 April 1986 a Symposium on Algebraic Groups was held at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, in celebration of the 350th birthday of the University and the 60th of T.A. Springer. Recognized leaders in the field of algebraic groups and related areas gave lectures which covered wide and central areas of mathematics. Though the fourteen papers in this volume are mostly original research contributions, some survey articles are included. Centering on the Symposium subject, such diverse topics are covered as Discrete Subgroups of Lie Groups, Invariant Theory, D-modules, Lie Algebras, Special Functions, Group Actions on Varieties
Proceedings of a Conference on Local Fields; NUFFIC Summer School held at Driebergen (The Netherlands) in 1966 by T. A Springer( Book )

30 editions published between 1966 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 387 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From July 25-August 6, 1966 a Summer School on Local Fields was held in Driebergen (the Netherlands), organized by the Netherlands Universities Foundation for International Cooperation (NUFFIC) with financial support from NATO. The scientific organizing Committl!e consisted ofF. VANDER BLIJ, A.H.M. LEVELT, A.F. MaNNA, J.P. MuRRE and T.A. SPRINGER. The Summer School was attended by approximately 80 mathematicians from various countries. The contributions collected in the present book are all based on the talks given at the Summer School. It is hoped that the book will serve the same purpose as the Summer School: to provide an introduction to current research in Local Fields and related topics. July 1967 T.A. Octonions, Jordan algebras, and exceptional groups by T. A Springer( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 274 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The 1963 Gottingen notes of T.A. Springer are well-known in the field but have been unavailable for some time. This book is a translation of those notes, completely updated and revised. The part of the book dealing with the algebraic structures is on a fairly elementary level, presupposing basic results from algebra. In the group-theoretical part use is made of some results from the theory of linear algebraic groups. The book will be useful to mathematicians interested in octonion algebras and Albert algebras, or in exceptional groups. It suitable for use in a graduate course in algebra."--Jacket

Selecta by Hans Freudenthal( Book )

9 editions published in 2009 in German and English and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hans Freudenthal (1905 - 1990) was a Dutch mathematician, born in Luckenwalde, Germany. His scientific activities were of a rich variety. Enrolling at the University of Berlin as a student in the 1920s, he followed in the footsteps of his teachers, and became a topologist, but with a lively interest in group theory. Later in life, after a long journey through the realm of mathematics, working on almost all subjects that drew his interest, he turned towards the practical and methodological issues of the didactics of mathematics
Jordan algebras and algebraic groups by T. A Springer( )

9 editions published between 1973 and 1998 in English and German and held by 86 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the reviews: "This book presents an important and novel approach to Jordan algebras. Jordan algebras have come to play a role in many areas of mathematics, including Lie algebras and the geometry of Chevalley groups. Springer's work will be of service to research workers familiar with linear algebraic groups who find they need to know something about Jordan algebras and will provide Jordan algebraists with new techniques and a new approach to finite-dimensional algebras over fields." (American Scientist) "By placing the classification of Jordan algebras in the perspective of classification of certain root systems, the book demonstrates that the structure theories associative, Lie, and Jordan algebras are not separate creations but rather instances of the one all-encompassing miracle of root systems. ..."
