The circle of mountains : a Basque shepherding community by Sandra Ott( )

30 editions published between 1981 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 1,836 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The commune of Sainte-Engrace extends along a mountain valley in the southeastern corner of Soule, one of the three Basque provinces in France. In The Circle of Mountains, Sandra Ott examines the importance of cooperation and reciprocity as the essential basis for the main institutions within this community. These French Basques visualize their community as circle, and their vision of living in the "circle of mountains," rather than in a valley, reflects their perspective on the society in which they live. The first half of the book incorporates material on history, ecology, and economy, and delves deeply into the domestic organization kinship, and neighborliness of this Basque community. In the second half of the book, the author introduces the males' customary roles as shepherds and cheesemakers. Following a detailed commentary on these vocations, Ott suggests that these seemingly prosaic activities represent the male attempt at symbolic fulfillment of the female procreative and nurturing roles. In a new afterword, Ott discusses developments that have impacted life in the pastoral community of Sainte-Engrace since the original publication of this book - including the construction of roads to nearly every home and the acquisition of telephones. The Circle of Mountains will be of interest not only to social anthropologists but also to those concerned with the Basque language and culture and to scholars and students of ethnology, international studies, and political science

The Basques of Santazi( Visual )

12 editions published between 1987 and 2009 in English and held by 225 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In her book 'The Circle of Mountains' Sandra Ott provided a fascinating analysis of social reciprocity ... The film highlights the village's contemporary dilemmas and thereby complements rather than visualises the arguments in Ott's published ethnography ... The approach is to be applauded since the book and the film now make excellent companion pieces that can usefully be employed in any course on European ethnography. This film follows the lives over one year, shot during three intervals, of two Basque shepherding families who live in Santazi, a village in the foothills of the French Pyrenees. The film is the only Disappearing World film made in western Europe and it focuses on the continuity and change in the community. Change has come to the village of Santazi in recent years along the avenues of introduced roads and improved communication systems with the outside world. The effects stretch from people's relationship with the Catholic religion to inheritance customs. Television has of course also entered these villagers' homes. The traditional life of shepherding is also changing amidst the conflict of interest between those who have formed a syndicated in an effort to maintain the viability of shepherding and the sons who have taken jobs as linemen for the electricity company. This film shows the rationality behind the choice the villagers are making. This film is recommended for courses in anthropology, sociology, culture change, and European communities
Living with the enemy : German occupation, collaboration, and justice in the Western Pyrenees, 1940-1948 by Sandra Ott( Book )

11 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 174 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In post-liberation France, the French courts judged the cases of more than one hundred thousand people accused of aiding and abetting the enemy during the Second World War. In this book, Sandra Ott uncovers the hidden history of collaboration in the Pyrenean borderlands of the Basques and the Bearnais in southwestern France through nine stories of human folly, uncertainty, ambiguity, ambivalence, desire, vengeance, duplicity, greed, self-interest, opportunism and betrayal. Covering both the occupation and liberation periods, she reveals how the book's characters became involved with the occupiers for a variety of reasons, ranging from a desire to settle scores and to gain access to power, money and material rewards, to love, friendship, fear and desperation. These wartime lives and subsequent postwar reckonings provide us with a new lens through which to understand human behavior under the difficult conditions of occupation, and the subsequent search for retribution and justice

Basques : EX08( )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Basques live in southwestern Europe straddling the French-Spanish border. There are four traditional regions (Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, Nafarroa, Araba) on the Spanish side and three (Lapurdi, Behe-Nafarroa, and Zuberoa) on the French side. This file consists of fifteen English and two Spanish language documents. Many are community studies dealing with the villages of Echalar, Murelaga, Elgeta, Fuenterrabia, Mondragon, Usurbil, Itziar, Excurra in northern Spain, and Sainte-Engrace in the Province of Soule in southwestern France. Most of the studies, however, relate to the Spanish Basque areas and particularly the Province of Guipúzcoa. The studies by Douglass, Heiberg, and Caro Baroja provide a general overview of the society. Many of the works lean heavily on the subject of Basque nationalism and politics, and relations with the Spanish government during the Spanish Civil War
