Philosophy, and other areas. Kainz forgoes customary paragraph-by-paragraph or section-by-section analysis in order to focus on Hegel's system as a whole and its seminal ideas, making generous use of representative texts. Kainz gives special attention to the interrelationship between dialectical methodology and paradoxical propositions; the prevalence of metaphor in the philosophy of nature; and the close interrelationship between Christian doctrine and Hegelian

"Dialectic" is a fulcrum word. Aristotle attacked this belief, saying that the dialectic was only suitable for some purpose- to enquire into men's beliefs, to arrive at truths about eternal forms of things, known as Ideas, which were fixed and un changing and constituted reality for Plato. Aristotle said there is also the method of science, or "physical" method, which observes physical facts and arrives at truths about substances, which undergo change. This duality ofform and substance and the scientific method of arriving at facts about substances were central to Aristotle's philosophy. Thus the dethronement of dialectic from what Socrates and Plato held it to be was ab solutely essential for Aristotle, and "dialectic" was and still is a fulcrum word ... I think it was Coleridge who said everyone is either a Plato nist or an Aristotelian ... Plato is the essential Buddha-seeker who appears again and again in each generation, moving on ward and upward toward the "one." Aristotle is the eternal motorcycle mechanic who prefers the "many." R
Phenomenology of spirit by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel( Book )

8 editions published between 1994 and 2013 in English and German and held by 224 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hegel's Phenomenology was written, so the story goes, on the eve of Napoleon's destruction of the Holy Roman Empire and at the beginning of the German 'Wars of Liberation.' The book itself is no less dramatic and revolutionary. It is Hegel's grandest experiment, changing our vision of the world and the very nature of the philosophical enterprise. Hegel puts into harmony ethics and autonomy, ancient philosophy and tragedy, Byronic Romanticism, German poetry, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the concept of virtue, the history of religion (including an ambiguous defense and critique of modern Christianity), the beginnings of a new philosophy of science and Kant's moral philosophy. All are tied together with the dazzling if sometimes bewildering leaps in logic that have come to be known as 'Hegel's dialectic.'

Hegel's Phenomenology of spirit : not missing the trees for the forest by Howard P Kainz( Book )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In most commentaries on Hegel's Phenomenology, the emphasis has been on presenting the totality as a chain of phenomenological developments leading up inexorably to the final chapter on "Absolute Knowledge." In other words, the "mission" of the commentator has been to make sure that the reader does not "miss the forest for the trees," as the saying goes - getting so wrapped up in individual "moments" that he or she misses the all-important dialectical movement of the work. In Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit, Howard P. Kainz provides a tour of some of the "trees" that are of interest in their own right and keys to the ongoing appreciation of this classical work."--Jacket
