Frank Gehry, architect by Frank O Gehry( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 900 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since the 1997 completion of what many consider his greatest achievement - the stunning Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain - Frank O. Gehry has soared to the forefront of contemporary American architecture. Long recognized by his peers for his innovative designs, Gehry now enjoys a new level of prominence in the popular imagination. This book, the catalogue of the first large-scale retrospective of Gehry's work in 15 years, examines the architect's unique vision and provides the historical perspective with which to interpret the audacious accomplishments." "Essays by noted museum curators and architectural historians explore his iconoclastic spirit and trace his melding of unconventional materials and forms. Photographs, drawings, plans, and scale models communicate the breadth and complexity of Gehry's work and show how, in his view of architecture as sculptural space, Gehry has opened up a world of new possibilities for architecture."--Jacket

Frank Gehry : the houses by Mildred S Friedman( Book )

15 editions published between 2009 and 2013 in English and French and held by 372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the great architects of our time, Frank Gehry has revolutionized the use of materials in design and redefined how architects use computers as a design tool to advance form-making as we know it. He has achieved worldwide fame for such large-scale public projects as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California, but it was in private houses that Gehry first explored and interrogated the principles of modern architecture. In these houses - most notably his own, in Santa Monica, California - Gehry distorted, expanded, and collapsed the modernist box, exploring everyday materials (corrugated metal, unfinished plywood, and chain link), experimenting with color, and challenging accepted notions about geometry and structure. In houses such as the Schnabel House in Brentwood, California, and the Winton Guest House in Wayzata, Minnesota, he experimented with collage and assemblage. More recently, Gehry's work has taken on sculptural forms, aided by new structural and geometric potentials of digital design, as in the near-legendary Lewis House in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Color photographs, sketches, and plans create an illuminating visual record of some of the most groundbreaking, seminal projects of Gehry's oeuvre."--Jacket

Carlo Scarpa, architect : intervening with history by Carlo Scarpa( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Between 1953 and 1978 the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa produced an incredibly varied range of works that challenge our notions of what modern architecture might be. Foremost in that work was the need to reconcile a wholehearted embrace of the new with the longstanding traditions of local craft and of universal practice to create an architecture that would clearly express its own machine-driven times without abandoning the psychic and sensual forces of place, materiality, and memory." "Carlo Scarpa, Architect: Intervening with History illustrates, through abundant reproductions of Scarpa's drawings, the ways the architect created a dialogue with light, space, and architecture within the historic fabric of Italian cities. Presenting these projects as they exist today, the patient eye of contemporary photographer Guido Guidi deepens our understanding of this timely approach to architectural dialogue."--Jacket

Theater of Architecture is a breathtaking tour through Hugh Hardy's work, but also an education in architecture. The places he creates are places you want to feel and be in. Adele Chatfield-Taylor, American Academy in Rome In his fifty-year career as an architect, Hugh Hardy has built and reshaped America's cultural landscape through work for some of its most beloved institutions. Theater of Architecture gathers twenty projects from within New York City and beyond-from the magnificent restored Radio City Music Hall and the revived New Victory and New Amsterdam theaters near Times Square to state-of-the-art facilities such as the Botanical Research Institute of Texas in Fort Worth. Hardy discusses in detail each project's development and the challenges, strategies, and human concerns that influenced its design. Critic Mildred Friedman provides further insight in conversations with many of Hardy's clients and collaborators. Hardy's work has been consistently recognized by civic, architectural, and preservation organizations for its progressive spirit and sensitivity to context. Theater of Architecture is an illuminating study of the creation of memorable architecture
