The decay of czarism : the Beiliss trial, a contribution to the history of the political reaction during the last years of Russian czarism : based on unpublished materials in the Russian archives by A. S Tager( Book )

2 editions published in 1935 in English and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A history of the Beilis ritual murder affair, discussing the investigation and the trial. Argues that the trial was initiated by the Council of Unified Nobility and the Union of the Russian People (aka Black Hundred), and conducted by the tsarist government, which sought arguments against Jewish emancipation and wanted to justify its repressive measures against both the revolutionary movement and the Jews. The government prepared the array of false testimonies to support the prosecution; invited unscrupulous or ignorant experts, like professor Sikorskii and the Catholic priest Pranaitis; and tried to find a "scientific" demonstration of the existence of blood rituals in Judaism. Examines the investigation and dwells on the actual murderers of the boy Andrei Yushchinskii, the criminal gang led by Vera Cheberyak. The acquittal of Beilis by the jury was assessed by contemporaries as a defeat of tsarism. Describes, also, the next attempt of the Russian authorities to launch a ritual murder affair, the Fastov case of 1913-14
