In 1874-1875 componeerde Grieg zijn muziek bij Henrik Ibsens toneelstuk 'Peer Gynt', bestaande uit in totaal 23 orkeststukken, melodrama's, liederen en koorstukken. De componist koos daar later zelf acht stukken uit voor de twee Suites op. 46 en 55. Deze Suites zijn tot de meest geliefde klassieke orkestmuziek gaan behoren.
