Manual for drivers and guides descriptive of The Indian Watchtower at Desert View and its relation, architecturally, to the prehistoric ruins of the southwest by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

From the back cover: "Dear boys...." was the salutation of Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter in her Manual for Drivers and Guides, written for the men who drove tourists out to the Watchtower at Desert View on the East Rim of Grand Canyon in the 1930s. Mary Colter was chief architect and interior designer for the Fred Harvey Company [sic] through the first four decades of the 20th century. Grand Canyon National Park still boasts the greatest collection of her buildings in the country. The Manual, now back in print, was Colter's response to questions about the sweeping 360-degree view from the 70-foot-tall Watchtower. Before its construction, she spent six months investigating archaeology sites in the Four Corners region. Back at the Canyon, Colter closely supervised the astounding re-creation of an ancient stone tower rising from the rim rock. In the pages of the Manual, we gain a rare glimpse in her own words of what inspired each masterful stoke of her design. Today, visitors to the Desert View Watchtower can appreciate the perfection Mary Jane Colter demanded, view murals painted by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie on the interior walls, and admire one of her signature creations

Scope Note: The "Room Schedule" compiled in July of 1930 is a 165 page planner containing a room by room inventory of the contents of La Posada including bedroom curtains, rugs, Indian blankets, bedroom furnishings, bedroom slip covers, bed spreads and tapestries with swatches for the last three mentioned. The inventory is a concise list of all items found in La Posada from the lounge to lobby, writing room to foyer, lunch room and dining room and hallways and guest rooms with a description of the item, where the item was purchased or who gifted it, as well as where the upholstery and embroideries were made. Room inventories also include the color of paint on hotel walls. In addition the collection contains four black and white photographs. The first photograph of the dining room set for buffet style dinner party (5 x 7 inches b/w photograph) shows dining room with plates in dining room screens where there are a selection of plates from Spain and Italy, some purchased from W.C. Owen in Chicago, Illinois and some from Carbone Inc. in Boston, Massachusetts. In the second photograph depicting the dining room dinner for the Navy (8 x 10 inches, b/w), Navy personnel appear sitting in carved wood dining chairs from McClellan Mfg. Co. Los Angeles, California with plate shelves made by E.V. Birt. In the third photograph (8 x 10 inches, b/w photograph), the same Navy personnel are featured sitting in carved wood dining chairs from McClellan Mfg. Co. Los Angeles, California with plate shelves made by E.V. Birt and Chas. Hall. In the last of the four photographs, the dining room is made into a dance hall (8 x 10 inches, b/w photograph); this photograph features the carved wood dining chairs from McClellan Mfg. Co. Los Angeles and plate shelves made by E.V. Birt plus plates on plate shelves from Chas. Hall. In the object collection, there is a carved walnut folding footstool with Arabic embroidery seat, and an antique low carved walnut chair with braided thong seat. The collection also features a carved green high chair occasionally used in the dining room, and a folding chair with a sole leather seat. The collection includes a Tohono O'odham (most likely Mexican) waste paper basket and a copper flower pot. Of the three plates in the collection, there are two 14" (13.5) Italian flower plates with red and blue flowers, and one 9.5" Italian fruit bowl plate
