Smiling through the cultural catastrophe : toward the revival of higher education by Jeffrey Peter Hart( Book )

13 editions published between 1900 and 2001 in English and held by 687 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although the essential books of Western civilization are no longer central in our courses or in our thoughts, they retain their ability to energize us intellectually, says the author. He presents a guide to some of these literary works, tracing the main currents of Western culture for all who wish to understand the roots of their civilization and the basis for its achievements. He focuses on the productive tension between the classical and biblical strains in our civilization--between a life based on cognition and one based on faith and piety. He begins with the Iliad and Exodus, linking Achilles and Moses as Bronze Age heroic figures. Closely analyzing texts and illuminating them in unexpected ways, he moves on to Socrates and Jesus, who "internalized the heroic," continues with Paul and Augustine and their Christian synthesis, addresses Dante, Shakespeare (Hamlet), Molière, and Voltaire, and concludes with the novel as represented by 'Crime and punishment' and 'The Great Gatsby.' He maintains that the dialectical tensions suggested by this survey account for the restlessness and singular achievements of the West and that the essential books can provide the substance and energy currently missed by both students and educated readers.--

The making of the American conservative mind : National review and its times by Jeffrey Peter Hart( Book )

16 editions published between 2005 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 580 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

National Review has been the leading conservative national magazine since it was founded in 1955, and in that capacity it has played a decisive role in shaping the conservative movement in the United States. Here, senior editor Hart provides an authoritative history of how the magazine has come to define and defend conservatism for the past fifty years. He also gives a firsthand account of the thought and sometimes colorful personalities--including James Burnham, Willmoore Kendall, Russell Kirk, Frank Meyer, William Rusher, Priscilla Buckley, Gerhart Niemeyer, and, of course, the magazine's founder, William F. Buckley Jr.--who contributed to National Review's life and wide influence. As Hart sees it, the magazine has regularly veered between ideology and a "politics of reality." Its catholicity and originality--attributable to Buckley's magnanimity and sense of showmanship--has made the magazine the most interesting of its kind in the nation, concludes Hart.--From publisher description

The living moment : modernism in a broken world by Jeffrey Peter Hart( Book )

6 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 294 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the spirit of Lionel Trilling, Edmund Wilson, and Susan Sontag, the renowned literary critic Jeffrey Hart writes The Living Moment, a close reading of literature as it intersects with the political. Hart's book is an even-handed guide for anyone toddling into the mists of the modernist moment, effortlessly moving between such modernist monuments as Eliot's "(BThe Waste Land," Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Mann's Doctor Faustus, and Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Hart's most stunning achievement is his brilliant inclusion of Marilynne Robinson's Gilead as a modernist text, for the way the novel teaches us to see more, to hear more, to feel more. Hart's dazzling study is an examination of important works of literature as they explore the experience of living in a broken world with thought and sometimes with examples of resolve that possess permanent validity. The Living Moment is for anyone who is wearied by so much of today's trendy, narrow, and ideologically driven criticism

Tragedy of the commons simulation by David C Ramsey( )

1 edition published in 1986 and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tragedy of the commons is a simulation which will help familiarize the player with Garrett Hardin's concept of the "Tragedy of the Commons." The Tragedy of the Commons" is based on the idea that exploitation of a commons may lead to a gain for an individual but an overall loss for the community. To illustrate this point the program uses the example of the custom in English villages to treat the community pasture as a commons on which any village herdsman might graze his individually-owned cattle for private gain. The game progresses through 8 rounds during which the commons becomes increasingly overgrazed. The player is asked to make decisions regarding the purchase of cattle and is given feedback on his assets and expenditures
