Introduction to early modern English by Manfred Görlach( Book )

49 editions published between 1978 and 2003 in 3 languages and held by 803 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The period between 1500 and 1700 was the most decisive one in the formation of standard modern English, yet no really comprehensive account of Early Modern English has been available. Manfred Gorlach's Introduction to Early Modern English fills a very real need. It provides a thorough and linguistically informed synchronic description of Early Modern English, dealing with its varieties, with writing and orthography, phonetics and phonology, syntax and the lexicon, including sections on problems of language contact and the lexicographical tradition. In addition, it provides a valuable anthology of texts from a wide range of sources: the texts exemplify features from Early Modern English discussed in the main body of the book, and have also been effectively chosen so as to provide something of the cultural background to the processes of linguistic change of the period. This textbook is admirably suited to undergraduate courses, and will be welcomed by all students of English language and literature studying the Early Modern period

"English in Europe charts the linguistic impact of English on Europe since 1945. Distinguished European scholars report on the English words and phrases that have become integral parts of their languages. Each describes the effect of English on the host language, and shows how the process of incorporation often modifies pronunciation and spelling of English words and frequently transforms their meaning and use."--Jacket

Problems of how to describe and explain the forms and functions of English outside Britain and the United States (and of varieties within the two countries) have become central for English linguistics over the past twenty years. The present collection combines 8 of Gorlach's major articles in the field written between 1984 and 1988. They range from methodological and state-of-the-art accounts to treatments of "colonial lag", from lexicographical problems, and translations into pidgins and creoles to papers focussing on individual regions

"This collection represents an important contribution not only to creole linguistics but also to Caribbean studies and English dialectology. It contains eleven essays on the special development and present-day functions of English and Creole in the Caribbean, ranging from Central America to Guyana. Topics include the spread of English and Creole, Spanish-English contact, the reconstruction of early phonology, the semantics of syntactic markers, the impact of colonial language policies, language and class, and the speech of Rastafarians. Half of the contributors are from the Caribbean region; the others are from Europe, Africa and the United States."--Page 4 of cover
Even more Englishes : studies, 1996-1997 by Manfred Görlach( Book )

18 editions published in 1998 in English and Undetermined and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Even More Englishes comprises Manfred Görlach's more recent papers devoted to general problems of the world language and to individual varieties. The collection starts with principal questions as to what can rightly be regarded as 'English', looks at specific features of emigrant Englishes and the value of individual features as evidence for linguistic geography - and for linguistic jokes. The functional range of Scots is traced through its history, and the question is raised whether we are justified to speak of 'Celtic Englishes' in Britain and Ireland. Two papers investigate the forms and functions of the world language in two African states, South Africa and Nigeria. A survey of new dictionaries of varieties of English and a discussion of whether pidgin and creole languages need different types of dictionaries are followed by a documentation of the history of the author's projects in the field of English as a world language. Even More Englishes complements Englishes and More Englishes previously published in the Varieties of English Around the World book series

Text types and the history of English by Manfred Görlach( Book )

20 editions published between 2004 and 2008 in English and held by 198 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book comprises methodological reflexions on form, content and function in a comprehensive description of text types/genres. The description is completed by a summary list of some 2100 text types with definitions and their documentation in the history of English
An annotated bibliography of nineteenth-century grammars of English by Manfred Görlach( Book )

15 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the 19th century, education became accessible to much wider circles of society in a great number and variety of schools and the teaching of grammar came to be obligatory from 1870/72 with the advent of general education. Whereas these general trends of the 19th century are well-known to scholars working in different disciplines of social history, and the history of education in particular, it is still true that major sections of the evidence are largely uncollected. This is especially so for school books: there is virtually a gap between the 18th century and the present grammatical tradition. This bibliography lists some 1930 works on English grammar published in the 19th century, mainly in Britain and the US, half of which are accompanied by short descriptions of their physical make-up, content and affiliation
English words abroad by Manfred Görlach( Book )

15 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The author discusses the elicitation of data from informants with a high linguistic awareness; criteria for inclusion; problems of integration on graphemic, phonological, morphological and semantic/stylistic levels; and speakers' reactions (purism, language, legislation). He then explores the possibilities of applying these methods to dictionaries of gallicisms and germanisms. The book includes a survey of the most recent dictionaries of anglicisms in European languages."--Jacket

The continuing expansion of research in dialectology, sociolinguistics and English as a world language has made the field increasingly difficult to survey. The collection is in four parts, dealing respectively with general studies, Britain and Ireland, the United States and Canada, and the rest of the world. There is a joint index in which the 2800 entries are classified according to specific areas, ethnic gro
