The Province of Jurisprudence Determined (1832) is a classic of nineteenth-century English jurisprudence, a subject on which Austin had a profound impact. His book is primarily concerned with a meticulous explanation of most of the core concepts of his legal philosophy, including his conception of law, his separation of law and morality, and his theory of sovereignty. Almost a quarter of it consists of an interpretation and defence of the principle of utility. This edition includes the complete and unabridged text of the fifth (1885) and last edition. The comprehensive introduction discusses Austin's life, the main themes of his book, leading criticisms of his ideas, and interpretations of his legal philosophy. The edition also includes a bibliography and biographical synopses of the principal figures mentioned in the text

Utilitarianism, On liberty, Essay on Bentham. Together with selected writings of Jeremy Bentham and John Austin by John Stuart Mill( Book )

The word utiliarianism was coined by Jeremy Bentham in 1781 in a letter to friend in which he said: "A new religion would be an odd sort of thing without a name." While the doctrine never quite became a religion, its thesis, as expressed by Mill in the first essay in this volume-that the good and right are to be defined as that which promotes happiness-became the dominant naturalistic theory of the nineteenth century and provided the moral basis for classical liberalism
Doing Austin justice : the reception of John Austin's philosophy of law in nineteenth-century England by Wilfrid E Rumble( Book )

9 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 152 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Wilfrid E. Rumble's book analyses John Austin's work in its historical context, emphasizing how it was interpreted, criticized and defended. The end result is a richer, more nuanced portrait of Austin's legal philosophy than his twentieth-century critics have painted. Doing Austin Justice thus fills a large gap in the literature about this important figure. It will be of substantial interest to jurists, historians of political philosophy, and of the nineteenth century more generally."--Jacket

17 editions published between 1863 and 2011 in Spanish and English and held by 47 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
