Music critic Tim Page interviews American composer, pianist and teacher Charles Wuorinen. Wuorinen speaks about contemporary music, and about the increased interest in all kinds of it. He talks about electronic music, but he says that he does not believe that it will replace traditional musical instruments. He also comments on whether he sees a connection to the music we listen to now and early music. He speaks also about the connection between composers and performers, and says that composers provide very general instructions to performers, and expect a wide variety of interpretations from them. The composer discusses his Percussion symphony, and excerpts from this symphony are played during his interview. At the end of the interview he gives advice to young composers

To Boulez and beyond : music in Europe since The rite of spring by Joan Peyser( Book )

3 editions published between 1999 and 2008 in English and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Joan Peyser offers a history of twentieth century music through the lives and works of its greatest composers in To Boulez and Beyond. Peyser provides historical context and suggests psychological insight for these masters, including Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern of the Second Viennese School; their immediate ancestors Wagner and Mahler; Rimsky-Korsakov and his pupil Stravinsky; and Hindemith, Bartók, Cowell, and Varèse. Discussing proponents of serialism and twelve-tone technique, as well as those who worked against these styles, the book also considers Berio, Stockhausen, Shostakovich, Babbitt, Copland, Wuorinen, and Cage, among others, describing how and why music moved throughout the 20th century. The largest section of the book is devoted to the life and works of Pierre Boulez. A new preface and a bibliography help to round out this revised and updated edition
