Daphnis & Chloe by Longus( Book )

3 editions published between 1931 and 1933 in French and held by 75 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

LONGUS (whose very name is uncertain) is known to us only by his novel Daphnis and Chloe. He seems to have been a pagan sophist who lived about A.D. 200, possibly a Greek freedman in a Roman household. This romance recounts the adventures of two foundlings, brought up together by shepherds, from their infancy to their marriage. Unlike most examples of the genre, Daphnis and Chloe is concerned less with improbable incident than with the development of the main characters and their initiation into the secrets of human love. PARTHENIUS of Nicea in Bithynia, a Greek poet, was brought to Rome in 73 B.C. as a prisoner of war. After his release he settled in Italy and worked as a poet and teacher. Virgil was one of his pupils. Parthenius's poetry, mainly elegiac, is lost, and his only extant work is Erotica Pathemata, an anthology of prose summaries of love-stories from Greek literature, collected apparently for the use of Roman poets
The faerie queene by Edmund Spenser( Book )

2 editions published in 1923 in English and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene is among the most important literary products of the Elizabethan age, and the vast sweep of its moral, political and social concerns tells us more about the age than any other work. This volume, first published in 1989, offers detailed readings of each of the poem's seven books, along with introductory chapters on Spenser's career, and the roots of the poem in the English and continental traditions. Humphrey Tonkin pays particular attention to the work's political and cultural role and its contribution to the development of Elizabethan ideology. A comprehensi

in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although published nearly 400 years ago in Spanish, this parody of the chivalrous life remains amazingly familiar in translation today-perhaps from the extensive influence it has played on novelists, playwrights and even composers over the centuries, or perhaps from its eternal storyof the childlike and comic view of a decayed world by a madman stuck in a golden past

Utopia by Thomas More( Book )

3 editions published in 1906 in English and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First published in 1516, Saint Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most important works of European humanism. Through the voice of the mysterious traveler Raphael Hythloday, More describes a pagan, communist city-state governed by reason. Addressing such issues as religious pluralism, women's rights, state-sponsored education, colonialism, and justified warfare, Utopia seems remarkably contemporary nearly five centuries after it was written, and it remains a foundational text in philosophy and political theory. Preeminent More scholar Clarence H. Miller does justice to the full range of More's rhetoric in this new translation. Professor Miller includes a helpful introduction that outlines some of the important problems and issues that Utopia raises, and also provides informative commentary to assist the reader throughout this challenging and rewarding exploration of the meaning of political community.
