"In tune with today's readers-rich but never effete-this is the art history book of choice for a new generation. Presenting a broad view of art from prehistory through the Gothic Age, it sympathetically and positively introduces the works of all artists. This includes women, artists of color, and the arts of other continents and regions, as well as those of Western Europe and the United States. The new edition contains even more full-color reproductions, larger images, redrawn maps and timelines, and new photographs and higher quality images. Balancing both the traditions of art history and new trends of the present, Art History is the most comprehensive, accessible, and magnificently illustrated work of its kind. Broad in scope and depth, this beautifully illustrated work features art from the following time periods and places: prehistory; art of the ancients (Near East, Egypt, the Aegean, Greece, Etruscan, and Roman); early Christian, Jewish, and Byzantine art; Islamic art; India before 1100; Chinese art before 1280; Japanese art before 1392; art of the Americas before 1300; the art of ancient Africa; early Medieval European art; Romanesque art, and Gothic art."--Publisher's description

This significantly updated and beautifully produced second edition survey of over a thousand years of Western art and architecture introduces the reader to a period of extraordinary historical and geographical extent ranging from ancient Rome to the age of exploration. The monumental arts and the diverse minor arts of the Middle Ages are presented here within the social, religious, and political frameworks of lands as varied as France and Denmark, Spain and Germany. This second edition of Medieval Art focuses on all of the major works and monuments, describing each clearly and in detail with descriptions that are also sensitive and articulate, giving the reader a full sense of their beauty. Marilyn Stokstad also teaches her reader how to look at medieval art-which aspects of architecture, sculpture, or painting are important and for what reasons. Stylistic and iconographic issues and themes are thoroughly addressed with attention paid to aesthetic and social contexts. Medieval Art spans the period from the second to the fifteenth centuries with over 400 illustrations, over 90 in color, four maps, a chronological table, glossary, bibliography, and index

Medieval castles by Marilyn Stokstad( Book )

6 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The castle was far more than a walled and turreted fortress; it was an instrument of social control and the symbol of power, authority, and wealth. Acknowledged expert Marilyn Stokstad combines interpretive essays and original documents in English translation in order to examine the role of the castle in society as well as its use in war. Commencing with an overview of the military and social systems operating in the Middle Ages, Stokstad places castles and other fortified places into an appropriate context. Readers are then guided through the development of early "motte and bailey" castles and the development of masonry towers and walls in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Castle as Fortress chapter considers the military aspect of castles, including siege warfare and the architectural response to attack and defense, in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Castle as Headquarters chapter explores castles and citadels as local and regional government and economic centers in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Castles as Symbol and Palace chapter looks at the symbolic role of architecture and at castles as elite residences and settings for public display. A concluding interpretive essay looks at the impact of gunpower on castles as well as our continuing fascination with the castle as a romantic fantasy of an idealized world. Thirty illustrations provide valuable visual references while twenty brief biographies of rulers, builders, and chroniclers allow a glimpse into the lives of those who lived in and constructed these impressive structures. Seventy excerpted and annotated primary documents cover topics ranging from the defense of castles to the banquets thrown within them. A glossary of terms, annotated chronology and index complete this useful work on a fascinating subject

This new edition of Art History is the result of a collaboration between two scholar-teachers (Marilyn Stokstad and Michael Cothren) who share a common vision that survey courses on the history of art should be filled with as much enjoyment as erudition, and that they should foster an enthusiastic, as well as an educated, public for the visual arts. Like its predecessors, this new edition seeks to balance formal and iconographic analysis with contextual art history in order to craft interpretations that will engage a diverse student population. Throughout the text, the visual arts are teated as part of a larger world, in which geography, politics, religion, economics, philosophy, social life, and the other fine arts are related components of a vibrant and cultural landscape
