Pastor and theologian Gayraud Stephen Wilmore was born on December 20, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. degree in 1947 and his B.D. degree in 1950, both from Lincoln University. From 1950 to 1953, he was the pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Westchester, Pennsylvania. Leaving the pulpit, he worked in several positions, including working with the United Presbyterian Church’s Department of Social Education and Action, teaching at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and serving as the Executive Director of the United Presbyterian Commission on Religion and Race. In 1983, he was named the dean of the divinity program at New York Theological Seminary. From there, Wilmore taught at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, and from 1990 to 1995 he served as editor of The Journal of the ITC. From 1995 to 1998, he taught at the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. He wrote and edited sixteen books
