Game theory and the social contract by
K. G Binmore(
)
66 editions published between 1988 and 2002 in English and Undetermined and held by 3,554 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In Game Theory and the Social Contract, Ken Binmore argues that game theory provides a systematic tool for investigating ethical matters. His reinterpretation of classical social contract ideas within a gametheoretic framework generates new insights into the fundamental questions of social philosophy. He clears the way for this ambitious endeavor by first focusing on foundational issues paying particular attention to the failings of recent attempts to import game theoretic ideas into social and political philosophy. Binmore shows how ideas drawn from the classic expositions of Harsanyi and Rawls produce a synthesis that is consistent with the modern theory of noncooperative games. In the process, he notes logical weaknesses in other analyses of social cooperation and coordination, such as those offered by Rousseau, Kant, Gauthier, and Nozick. He persuasively argues that much of the current literature elaborates a faulty analysis of an irrelevant game." Publisher's description

Game theory : a very short introduction by
K. G Binmore(
)
47 editions published between 1991 and 2017 in 11 languages and held by 2,626 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
From the Publisher: Games are everywhere: Drivers maneuvering in heavy traffic are playing a driving game. Bargain hunters bidding on eBay are playing an auctioning game. The supermarket's price for corn flakes is decided by playing an economic game. This Very Short Introduction offers a succinct tour of the fascinating world of game theory, a groundbreaking field that analyzes how to play games in a rational way. Ken Binmore, a renowned game theorist, explains the theory in a way that is both entertaining and nonmathematical yet also deeply insightful, revealing how game theory can shed light on everything from social gatherings, to ethical decisionmaking, to successful cardplaying strategies, to calculating the sex ratio among bees. With minibiographies of many fascinating, and occasionally eccentric, founders of the subjectincluding John Nash, subject of the movie A Beautiful Mindthis book offers a concise overview of a cuttingedge field that has seen spectacular successes in evolutionary biology and economics, and is beginning to revolutionize other disciplines from psychology to political science

Rational decisions by
K. G Binmore(
)
29 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,558 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The book is a wideranging exploration of standard theories of choice and belief under risk and uncertainty. Ken Binmore discusses the various philosophical attitudes related to the nature of probability and offers resolutions to paradoxes believed to hinder further progress. In arguing that the Bayesian approach to knowledge is inadequate in a large world, Binmore proposes an extension to Bayesian decision theory allowing the idea of a mixed strategy in game theory to be expanded to a larger set of what Binmore refers to as "muddled" strategies."Jacket

31 editions published between 2005 and 2015 in English and Japanese and held by 711 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In pursuing this point, the book proposes a naturalistic reinterpretation of John Rawls' original position that reconciles his egalitarian theory of justice with John Harsanyi's utilitarian theory by identifying the environment appropriate to each."Jacket

Playing for real : a text on game theory by
K. G Binmore(
Book
)
37 editions published between 2005 and 2015 in English and held by 623 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Game theory makes sense of a wide variety of human interactions, as Ken Binmore demonstrates in Playing for Real with a range of examples and applications. This new book is a replacement for Binmore's previous game theory textbook, Fun and Games. It is a lighthearted introduction to game theory suitable for advanced undergraduate students or beginning graduate students. It aims to answer three questions: What is game theory? How is game theory applied? Why is game theory right? It is the only book that tackles all three questions seriously without getting heavily mathematical."Jacket

)
31 editions published between 1992 and 2010 in English and French and held by 598 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The foundations of analysis : a straightforward introduction by
K. G Binmore(
Book
)
36 editions published between 1980 and 1981 in English and Spanish and held by 575 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In elementary introductions to mathematical analysis, the treatment of the logical and algebraic foundations of the subject is necessarily rather skeletal. This book attempts to flesh out the bones of such treatment by providing an informal but systematic account of the foundations of mathematical analysis written at an elementary level. This book is entirely selfcontained but, as indicated above, it will be of most use to university or college students who are taking, or who have taken, an introductory course in analysis. Such a course will not automatically cover all the material dealt with in this book and so particular care has been taken to present the material in a manner which makes it suitable for selfstudy. In a particular, there are a large number of examples and exercises and, where necessary, hints to the solutions are provided. This style of presentation, of course, will also make the book useful for those studying the subject independently of taught course

These 17 contributions take up the most recent research in game theory, reflecting the many diverse approachs in the field today. They are classified in five general categories: prediction, explanation, investigation, description, and prescription and within these along applied and theoretical divisions. The introduction lays out this framework

Evolution and rationality : decisions, cooperation and strategic behaviour by
Samir Okasha(
Book
)
11 editions published between 2012 and 2014 in English and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This volume explores from multiple perspectives the subtle and interesting relationship between the theory of rational choice and Darwinian evolution. In rational choice theory, agents are assumed to make choices that maximize their utility; in evolution, natural selection 'chooses' between phenotypes according to the criterion of fitness maximization. So there is a parallel between utility in rational choice theory and fitness in Darwinian theory. This conceptual link between fitness and utility is mirrored by the interesting parallels between formal models of evolution and rational choice. The essays in this volume, by leading philosophers, economists, biologists and psychologists, explore the connection between evolution and rational choice in a number of different contexts, including choice under uncertainty, strategic decision making and prosocial behaviour. They will be of interest to students and researchers in philosophy of science, evolutionary biology, economics and psychology"

The foundations of analysis : a straightforward introduction. Book 2, Topological ideas by
K. G Binmore(
Book
)
9 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is an introduction to the ideas from general topology that are used in elementary analysis. It is written at a level that is intended to make the bulk of the material accessible to students in the latter part of their first year of study at a university or college although students will normally meet most of the work in their second or later years. The aim has been to bridge the gap between introductory books like the author's Mathematical Analysis: A Straightforward Approach, in which carefully selected theorems are discussed at length with numerous examples, and the more advanced book on analysis, in which the author is more concerned with providing a comprehensive and elegant theory than in smoothing the ways for beginners. An attempt has been made throughout not only to prepare the ground for more advanced work, but also to revise and to illuminate the material which students will have met previously but may have not fully understood
