"This volume seeks to explore the impact of the Gulf War on the fashioning of a new world order, with particular reference to the role of the Middle East region. It is divided into four parts, each addressing a different facet. The purpose is to develop a holistic perspective of the new world order and to explore its external and internal dynamics. What is revealed is that the processes of policy articulation, formulation, and impact are interactively interrelated rather than sequentially related and dynamic rather than static vis-à̀-vis the relationship between objectives and outcomes"--Page 1

Kuwait : dependency and class in a rentier state by Jacqueline S Ismael( Book )

4 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 253 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ismael covers first the period from the foundation of Kuwait in the early 18th century, when the land was inhabited by camel-breeding bedouins, to the beginning of oil exportation at the end of World War II. She describes its decline from a thriving center of maritime commerce to an impoverished pearling backwash by the end of the war. In the second part she addresses the postwar impact of oil wealth on Kuwait and examines resulting changes in Kuwaiti society. Describing transformations in the world oil economy in the 1980s, Ismael adds a new section to chronicle changes in the political economy of the Gulf that threatened the superstructure of the region (constituted of absolute monarchies in rentier states). She sees Iraq's invasion of Kuwait as part of the larger political reality in the Gulf: change in the region will be forestalled by Western industrial powers at any price. Maintenance of the status quo now is dependent on military force, not political processes, and overt repression increasingly will replace cooptation as the means of quieting any opposition." -- Publisher description

International social welfare in a changing world( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book focuses on the increasing populations of homeless, displaced and marginalized people and on the expanding role of international agencies, international non-governmental organizations and bilateral programs providing relief, rehabilitation and social development services to them. Economic liberalization and the evolution of the global market, the collapse of the communist system and the rise of xenophobic nationalism, the militarization of the nation-state, the pauperization of large parts of Africa and Asia, and war are forces changing the political economy of the world, producing political and economic restructuring within and between states. New patterns of political, economic and social integration, fragmentation and disintegration have followed in the wake, leaving growing numbers of people dispossessed of the means to survive. International, multi-national and cross-national social welfare programs and services have developed to respond to the needs of pauperized people throughout the world

Iraq in the twenty-first century : regime change and the making of a failed state by Tareq Y Ismael( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Much has been written about the events surrounding the 2003 Anglo-American invasion of Iraq and its aftermath, especially about the intentions, principles, plans and course of action of US policy, but much less attention has been given to the consequences of US policy on Iraqi political and social development. This book provides an in-depth analysis of the impact of US policy on the social and political development of Iraq in the twenty-first century. It shows how not just the institutions of the state were destroyed in 2003, leaving the way open for sectarianism, but also the country's cultural integrity, political coherence, and national-oriented economy. It outlines how Iraq has been economically impoverished, assessing the appalling situation which ordinary people, including women and children, have endured, not just as a result of the 2003 war, but also as a consequence of the 1991 war and the sanctions imposed in the following years.0The book argues that the social, political, and cultural ruin that accompanied the Iraq war was an absolute catastrophe; that the policies which had such adverse effects were the foreseeable consequences of deliberate policy choices; and that those responsible continue to evade being made accountable
