Grofé composed the music based on narrative poems written by Dr. C. B. S. Evans. The announcer reads the poems before each movement is performed. Work is broadcast for the first time at this recorded performance at Death Valley held for the Death Valley centennial celebration by the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ferde Grofe (broadcast the same day as the performance).
