"The Smithsonian Institution has been America's museum since 1846. What do its vast collections - from the ruby slippers to a piece of Plymouth Rock, first ladies' gowns to patchwork quilts, a Model T Ford to a customized Ford LTD low rider - tell Americans about themselves? In this illustrated guide to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Steven Lubar and Kathleen M. Kendrick tell the stories behind more than 250 of the museum's treasures, many of them never before photographed for publication. These stories not only reveal what America as a nation has decided to save and why but also speak to changing visions of national identity."--BOOK JACKET

The spirit of invention : the story of the thinkers, creators, and dreamers who formed our nation by J. M Fenster ( Book )
1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
An illustrated appreciation of America's spirit of invention, which introduces unique characters whose insistence on change for the better made America what it is today. This book is a fascinating examination of innovation as a driving characteristic of Americans from all eras and all walks of life. In this book we meet Gertrude Forbes, a sickly widow so poor she had to live in her aunt's attic, who overcame the odds to invent, among other things, an adjustable ironing board cover. We follow Cromwell Dixon, a fifteen-year-old from Columbus, Ohio, whose dreams of finding a way to fly inspired him to invent a bicycle-powered airship. We see John Dove, an African-American inventor, originating concepts integral to the compact disc. We learn about Purdue University, one of the earliest educational institutions to promote invention and engineering ideas. We eavesdrop on Thomas Edison in his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, and also find out about the beginnings of film colorization, a controversial process that adds tint to film. And we read about Luther Burbank and how he revolutionized plant breeding. The book even reviews the invention of illegal devices such as the "light wand," which induced slot machines to pay out on every spin, and we are introduced to a poker player who invented a "holdout" that allowed him to conceal cards in a shirt sleeve during games

Piano 300 : celebrating three centuries of people and pianos by Cynthia A Hoover ( Book )
3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 267 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"On March 8, 2000 the National Museum of American History opened Piano 300 in the Smithsonian's International Gallery in Washington, D.C. Celebrating the tricentennial of the piano's invention in Florence by Bartolomeo Cristofori, this remarkable exhibition was seen by more than 330,000 visitors from around the world during the course of a 20-month run. Part exhibition catalogue and part technical and social history of the piano, Piano 300: Celebrating Three Centuries of People and Pianos presents the exhibition's highlights: the innovative craftsmen, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, teachers, performers, and composers who helped make the piano the most popular musical instrument of modern times. Written by Smithsonian curators Cynthia Adams Hoover, Patrick Rucker, and Edwin Good, this volume presents rare composers' manuscripts and first editions tracing the wealth and diversity of music inspired by the instrument. However, pride of place is given to the pianos themselves - those complex machines encased in handsome works of decorative art - including many from the Smithsonian's own distinguished Collection of Musical Instruments. Lavishly illustrated with more than 250 photographs, many in full color, Piano 300 captures the sweep and dimension of this highly successful tribute to one of Western culture's most beloved icons."--Back cover
