In "Different trains" wird das musikalische Material aus Sprachaufnahmen abgeleitet. Aus Gesprächen wurden kurze Abschnitte ausgewählt, die sich mehr oder weniger klar einer bestimmten Tonhöhe zuordnen lassen. Diese Abschnitte wurden dann möglichst genau in Noten umgesetzt, erklingen im Werk ab Sampler und werden von den Instrumenten gedoppelt. Der Titel des Werkes und das sprachliche Material beziehen sich auf Eisenbahnzüge, in denen Juden in der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkrieges unterwegs waren: Das Kind Steve Reich in Amerika, und, unter ganz anderen Umständen, deutsche Juden in Europa
