Verdi painted an immense canvas with this dark but tuneful opera. The legendary Leontyne Price is seen in one of her greatest roles, Leonora. Price's soaring voice encompasses every nuance of Leonora's emotion as she moves from joy through resignation to ultimate heartbreak. James Levine's brilliant leading of the Met orchestra and chorus is a lesson in Verdi style. Giuseppe Giacomini is Alvaro, the man Leonora loves, and Leo Nucci is Don Carlo, the dark instrument of their Fate

West Side story by Leonard Bernstein( Recording )

94 editions published between 1985 and 2019 in 7 languages and held by 744 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Deutsche Grammophon's recording of West Side Story, made in New York in September 1984, represents Bernstein's final vision for his great American musical. This wasn't a typical 'cast recording:' everybody was recruited especially for the job and moulded, literally overnight, into a musical team. It was, to say the least, a highly unlikely cast for what was basically a Broadway show, but as this was not a staged production, the rather unorthodox step of casting world-class opera singers was taken to bring out the musical strengths of Bernstein's inspiration: "I suppose the only foreseeable problem was that they might sound too old - but they don't, they just sound marvellous!" Bernstein was to recount. For Bernstein, who had never conducted the work before, it was an opportunity to explore the work as he had envisioned it, unrestricted by the medium of the LP or the size of the orchestra pit or the dramatic staging of the work: For the recording, the potpourri overture which was originally used in the theatre and which Bernstein himself did not write was discarded, the string section was enlarged, and the woodwind section expanded, and Bernstein allowed himself to take the tempos "as I really dreamed it." The result is one of Bernstein's best and legendary recordings, beloved by millions around the world
Carmen by Georges Bizet( Recording )

44 editions published between 1982 and 2008 in 8 languages and held by 695 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Under the scintillating direction of James Levine, the Met's orchestra and chorus add more than a dash of seasoning to Bizet's colorful score. A brilliant cast makes this popular work seem utterly fresh. Agnes Baltsa is riveting as Carmen, the impetuous gypsy woman determined to always be her own woman--while having any man she desires. José Carreras is heartbreaking as Don José, the man who falls into her snare, makes the mistake of loving her, and cannot stand to lose her to the strutting matador, Escamillo (Samuel Ramey)
