"Intended for both beginning and experienced genealogists, this guide to tracing British records provides material for navigating archives and a variety of printed sources. Others outline strategies for organizing research and making use of the Internet and other technology
The dictionary of genealogy by Terrick V. H FitzHugh( Book )

6 editions published between 1994 and 1998 in English and held by 389 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Researching family history is one of the most popular leisure activities throughout the world. The wide variety of documents which survive in this country, and overseas, make it possible for genealogists to unearth many generations of ancestors, some as far back as Domesday Book. They can learn about their ancestors' everyday lives and the area in which they lived. To do this, family historians need to extend their knowledge of archives, the legal system, legislation, law enforcement, professions, religion, education, topography, origins of surnames, migration and much more. For this a reference work is an essential tool. The Dictionary of Genealogy provides a very extensive glossary of all the terms encountered in such research. Illustrations provide an easy recognition of all the relevant documents in English and Latin. Supplementary tables and lists make this the most useful one-volume guide on the market for family historians."--Jacket

"The following notes fall into two main sections, namely an Alphabet of single letters; and secondly and extension thereof into an Alphabetical arrangement of the commoner Christian Names of the period A.D., 1550-1650. To the above is attached a table of Confusibilia, a short list of Abbreviations, and words commonly found in Parish Registers, and a collection of Surnames, illustrating various points. Virtually the sole source has been the Parish Register of Froome Selwood in Somerset, from which examples have been taken. The earlier portions of this Register were evidently copied in one hand at about 1598, when a number of different hands appear. The object has been to include as many varieties as was practicable, so as to form a nucleus fro reference, and this applies both to the formation of single letters, and to the spelling of Christian Names. Finally, a short selection of Place Names, all taken from a Calendar of Hampshire Wills, has been included as an exercise for those who like puzzles."--Introduction
