The fantastic : a structural approach to a literary genre by Tzvetan Todorov( Book )

120 editions published between 1970 and 2015 in 10 languages and held by 2,140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Theories of the symbol by Tzvetan Todorov( Book )

95 editions published between 1977 and 2004 in 7 languages and held by 1,749 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Focusing on theories of verbal symbolism, Tzvetan Todorov here presents a history of semiotics. From an account of the semiotic doctrines embodied in the works of classical rhetoric to an exploration of representative modern concepts of the symbol found in ethnology, psychoanalysis, linguistics, and poetics, Todorov examines the rich tradition of sign theory. In the course of his discussion Todorov treats the works of such writers as Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian, Augustine, Condillac, Lessing, Diderot, Goethe, Novalis, the Schlegel brothers, Levy-Bruhl, Freud, Saussure, and Jakobson. -- Publisher description

"Both a political history and a moral critique of the twentieth century, this is a personal and impassioned book from one of Europe's most outstanding intellectuals. Identifying totalitarianism as the major innovation of the twentieth century, Tzvetan Todorov examines the struggle between this system and democracy and its effects on human life and consciousness. Todorov explores the history of the past century not only by analyzing its spectacular political conflicts but also by offering moving profiles of several individuals who, at great personal cost, resisted the strictures of the Communist and Nazi regimes."--Jacket

Imperfect garden : the legacy of humanism by Tzvetan Todorov( Book )

13 editions published between 2002 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 543 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Imperfect Garden is both an approachable intellectual history and a bracing treatise on how we should understand and experience our lives. In it, one of Europe's most prominent intellectuals explores the foundations, limits, and possibilities of humanist thinking. Through his critical but sympathetic excavation of humanism, Tzvetan Todorov seeks an answer to modernity's fundamental challenge: how to maintain our hard-won liberty without paying too dearly in social ties, common values, and a coherent and responsible sense of self." "Placing the history of ideas at the service of a quest for moral and political wisdom, Todorov's compelling and no doubt controversial rethinking of humanist ideas testifies to the enduring capacity of those ideas to meditate on - and, if we are fortunate, cultivate - the imperfect garden in which we live."--Jacket
A French tragedy : scenes of civil war, summer 1944 by Tzvetan Todorov( Book )

10 editions published in 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 530 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As Allied troops landed in Normandy in 1944, members of the local French Resistance in the small town of Saint-Amand-Montrond embarked on an ill-fated attempt to liberate their town. Based on noble but politically questionable motives, and failing to inspire broader support, the incident quickly devolved from confrontation to a stand-off and ultimately to a tragedy. Resistance forces took and subsequently executed hostages; their opponents, the milice - collaborationist French police - and German soldiers rounded up 70 Jewish adults and children in retaliation and put many to a horrible death. Eminent literary and cultural critic Tzvetan Todorov examines the episode as history but also as a moral paradigm
The fear of barbarians : beyond the clash of civilizations by Tzvetan Todorov( Book )

25 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 451 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The relationship between Western democracies and Islam, rarely entirely comfortable, has in recent years become increasingly tense. Growing immigration and worries about cultural and political assimilation--exacerbated by the terrorist attacks of September 11 and their aftermath--have provoked reams of commentary from all parts of the political spectrum a frustrating majority of it hyperbolic or even hysterical. In The Fear of Barbarians, the celebrated intellectual Tzvetan Todorov offers a corrective: a reasoned and often highly personal analysis of the problem, rooted in Enlightenment values yet open to the claims of cultural difference. Drawing on history, anthropology, and politics, and bringing to bear examples ranging from the murder of Theo van Gogh to the French ban on headscarves in schools, Todorov argues that the West must overcome its fear of Islam if it is to avoid betraying the values it claims to protect. True freedom, Todorov explains, requires us to strike a delicate balance, between protecting and imposing cultural values, acknowledging the primacy of the law, yet strenuously protecting minority views that do not interfere with its aims. Adding force to Todorov's arguments is his own experience as a native of communist Bulgaria. His admiration of French civic identity--and Western freedom--is vigorous but non-nativist, an inclusive vision whose very flexibility is its core strength. The record of a penetrating mind grappling with a complicated, multifaceted problem, The Fear of Barbarians is a powerful, important book--a call, not to arms, but to thought."--Jacket
