Dan Graham by Birgit Pelzer( Book )

7 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 443 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dan Graham is among the most influential of the Conceptual artists who emerged in America during the mid 1960s. A pioneer in performance and video art in the 1970s, Graham later turned his attention to architectural projects designed for social interaction in public spaces. Writing has always been a major aspect of Graham's work. His texts range from early Conceptual art pieces inserted in mass-market magazines, to writing on his fellow artists, to analyses of popular culture, from Dean Martin to the post-Punk era. Well-known also among architects and urban theorists, during the 1990s Graham has been offered major public commissions throughout North America and Europe.--From publisher description

"This title, published in 1979 and long since out of print. The original book was released in the series of publications Source Materials of the Contemporary Arts. The publication represents an important document in Dan Graham's artistic examination of the video medium. Graham's installations and performances with video from the years 1970-78 are documented with numerous illustrations, photos, and brief descriptions. In addition, the volume contains an essay by the artist in which he examines the various possibilities and forms of representation offered by the video medium, and draws the boundaries between these and representational spaces in television, film, or architecture. The book also offers contributions by Michael Asher and Dara Birnbaum, as well as an annex with a biography and bibliography"--Cover sleeve

Since the 1960s, Graham's heterogeneous practice has touched on such disparate subjects as tract houseing, the Shakers, punk music, and architectural theory; he has made videos, architectural models, closed-circuit installations, and glass pavilions. He situated his work on the borders between earth art, minimalism, and conceptualism. Although varing widely in subject and medium, his artwork and writings display a consistent interest in spectatorship, public-private relationshipsh, and the constructed environment. This volum gathers key texts by critics and theorists that offer alternative accounts of Graham's art.--Back cover

Dan Graham : rock my religion by Kodwo Eshun( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dan Graham's Rock My Religion (1982-84) is a video essay populated by punk and rock performers (Patti Smith, Jim Morrison, Black Flag and Glenn Branca) and historical figures (including Ann Lee, founder of the Shakers). This coming together of several narrative voice-overs, of singing and shouting voices, of jarring sounds and text overlaid onto shaky, gritty images, proposes a historical genealogy of rock music and an ambitious thesis on the origins of America. In this illustrated book, Kodwo Eshun examines this landmark work of contemporary moving image in relation to Graham's wider body of work and to the broader culture of the time, especially in relation to history, popular culture, and individual and communal identity

Waterloo sunset at the Hayward Gallery by Dan Graham( Book )

5 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 99 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book follows the development of the innovative new foyer extension to the Hayward Gallery on the South Bank, London, in particular the construction of an elliptical, two-way mirror glass pavilion. Entitled Waterloo sunset at the Hayward Gallery, the pavilion has been designed by New York-based artist Dan Graham in collaboration with Haworth Tompkins Architects." "Including texts by Hayward Gallery Director Susan Ferleger Brades, architect Graham Haworth and Hayward Curator Emma Mahony, along with transcripts from an interview between writer and curator Mark Francis and the artist, this book provides an insight into the impetus and inspirations behind the creation of this new structure. Jam-packed with illustrations - from preliminary architect's drawings and plans to images of the construction process and reproductions of other Dan Graham works - it tells the story of a cross-disciplinary collaboration between artist and architecture."--BOOK JACKET
Nuggets : new and old writing on art, architecture, and culture by Dan Graham( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dan Graham (born 1942) began his career directing the John Daniels Gallery in New York City in 1964, where he mounted Sol LeWitt's first one-man show. Graham considered himself a writer-artist, publishing essays and reviews on topics ranging from rock music to Eisenhower's paintings and Dean Martin's television show. His earliest projects dealt with the magazine page, and one of his seminal early works was a series of magazine-style photographs with text, 'Homes for America' (1966-1967). Today he is among America's most prominent artists, both as a practitioner and as a well-respected critic and theorist. This important and substantial collection brings together an assortment of texts both old and new, with writings on art, artists' books, architecture and various artists Graham admires. Also included is a selection of interviews conducted since the 1990s.0Exhibition: Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome, Italy (22.4.-12.7.2013)

Cally Spooner : on false tears and outsourcing by Cally Spooner( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The live performances of British artist 'Cally Spooner' (born 1983) consider the ways in which labor and communication make demands on our bodies. Spooner engages actors, vocalists, dancers and musicians who collectively interrogate gesture and language. The artist's 2016 exhibition at the New Museum, 'Cally Spooner: On False Tears and Outsourcing', marks an important shift in her live performances, extending their duration to the length of a museum exhibition. The choreography is structured according to the logic of corporate development meetings, and appropriates gestures from both romantic movies and competitive contact sports. This catalogue contains an essay by Helga Christoffersen, an interview between Spooner and Documenta 14 curator Hendrik Folkerts, and a contribution by artist Dan Graham. Exhibition: New Museum, NYC, USA (27.04.-19.06.2016)

Apolonija Šušteršic : selected projects 1995-2012 by Apolonija Šušteršič( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in Spanish and held by 53 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Published on the occasion of her project at MUSAC Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in León this publication offers the first comprehensive survey on the work of Slovenian artist/architect Apolonija Šušteršic. Through a selection of projects spanning from 1995 to 2012, this monograph shows the methodologies and strategies of an artist whose practice touches on different aesthetical and political tendencies such as Conceptual art, Contextualism, institutional critique, and relational aesthetics. As an architect and artist, her work engages processes from both fields as well as applied design and other social sciences. Sustersic's project can be described as putting into practice a "politics in space." A "transdisciplinary," collaborative approach as such, it is absolutely indispensable when analyzing contexts as variegated as urban life, art museums, and other institutions and social spaces. 0Exhibition: MUSAC Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, León, Spain (19.01.-16.06.2013)
