Hal Clement is a Grand Master of SF, and the one most associated with the subgenre of hard SF. From his classic stories in Astounding in the 1940s through his novels of the 1950s and on to the recent Half Life, he has made a lasting impression on SF readers, and on writers, too. For many of them, Clement's work is the model of how to write hard SF, and this book contains the reasons why. Here are all the tales of bizarre, unforgettable Mesklin: the classic novel Mission of Gravity and its sequel, Star Light, as well as the short stories Under and Lecture Demonstration. Also included is Whirligig World, the famous essay Clement published in Astounding in 1953. It describes the rigorous process he used to create his intriguingly plausible high-gravity planet, with its odd flattened shape, its day less than eighteen minutes long, and its many-limbed, noble natives

Vol. 3: The third volume of the New England Science Fiction Association's Hal Clement reprint series is the most important yet because it includes two of Clement's Mesklin novels, Mission of Gravity (1954) and Star Light (1971), both long out of print. Dealing with relations between Barlinan, a ship captain from a world that has 800 gravities at the pole (i.e., things are very, very heavy there) and rotates in 18 minutes, and human explorers, the books are foundation stones of hard-science sf. Besides the novels, the collection includes Clement's article on the scientific basis of Mesklin, three short stories, and three original critical essays, on whose merits readers can make up their own minds. But have no doubt that Clement's own writing in the volume constitutes an essential acquisition for good sf collections

Hal Clement, one of the all-time greats of science fiction, was defining hard science fiction before such distinctions were even being thought of. He once described his approach to writing: "[T]he rules must be quite simple. They are; for the reader of a science-fiction story, they consist of finding as many as possible of the author's statements or implications which conflict with the facts as science currently understands them. For the author, the rule is to make as few such slips as he possibly can."He was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1999 and an annual award for Excellence in Children's Science Fiction has been established in his memory and is presented each year at the annual Worldcon. This collection presents some of his finest shorter pieces as collected by his friend and colleague, Lester del Rey
