Fifteen decisive battles of the world by Edward Shepherd Creasy( Book )

Ranging from Marathon to Waterloo, this classic of military history chronicles battles that changed the course of history. Originally published in 1851, at the zenith of British imperial power, it found an eager audience of readers who wanted to understand how Britain had achieved its tremendous influence and how long it would last. Since then, these chronicles of ancient and modern military confrontations have informed and inspired generations of students and armchair historians. Educated at Eton College and the University of Cambridge, Sir Edward Shepherd Creasy was called to the Bar in 1837, appointed to the faculty of the University of London in 1840, and served as Chief Justice of Ceylon from 1860 to 1870. Creasy's scholarship and literary skill are complemented by his judicial attitude, which endows this book with a fair-minded, nonpartisan approach. He prefaces each battle with an introduction that explains the circumstances surrounding the war, as well as an afterword that considers how history might have changed had victory gone to the other side. Linking passages offer valuable insights into historical events that occurred between the major encounters. Influential and ever-popular, this book offers authoritative and entertaining analyses of the conflicts that shaped world history

Undoubtedly the most famous work of military history of the nineteenth century, Edward S. Creasy's Fifteen decisive battles of the world has been read and re-read for close to 150 years. It is not only the authoritative account of each battle that makes Creasy's work such a classic--it is his command of narrative, his interest in human struggle, his profound deductions as to effects of the battles, and his striving after truth. Furthermore, his selections seem as wise and well-considered today as when Fifteen decisive battles first appeared in 1851: Nobody since has made better ones, nor given us better accounts. Apart from the scholarship and literary skill of Creasy's book, there is another reason it has endured: Creasy was essentially fair-minded. He had been a judge, and when he became England's great military critic and historian, he maintained a thoroughly judicial attitude. He was not a British partisan, nor French, nor German--he was a cosmopolitan observer of great events. Out of 2300 years, Creasy only found fifteen battles which he called decisive in the highest sense. He chose them not for the number of killed and wounded, nor for their status in myth and lore, but because they fundamentally changed the course of world history. In doing so, he made his book a miniature military history of the western world, a classic that will repay continued study for generations to come, as it has for generations

The assessments characterize untreated groundwater quality, rather than the quality of treated drinking water delivered to consumers by water distributors. The status assessment was based on water-quality data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey from 83 wells in the SNR study unit in 2008 and from 117 wells in 3 small study units within the SNR study unit in 2006-07 and on water-quality data compiled in the State's database for 1,066 wells sampled in 2006-08. To provide some context for the results, water-quality data were converted to relative-concentrations (RCs), which are the sample concentrations divided by the concentrations of Federal or California regulatory and non-regulatory benchmarks for drinking-water quality. RCs for inorganic constituents (major ions, trace elements, nutrients, and radioactive constituents) were classified as "high" (RC > 1.0, indicating that concentration is above the benchmark), "moderate" (1.0 e RC > 0.5), or "low" (RC d 0.5)

The history is organized in strictly chronological order and is primarily a political history. The contents include: rise of the Ottoman Empire from 1250-1520; the culmination of power under Suleiman and the beginning of the decline 1520-1699; the decline of the empire 1703-1792; and modern Turkey, 1792-1928. Much of the modern Turkey section is focused on the years during and preceding World War I. The Balkan States history focuses almost exclusively upon those nations during and after WWI. "The Balkan Problem 1453-1914" begins this history. Each chapter subsequently focuses on a state during and after the war
