"In 1944 His Majesty's Government authorized the publication of a collection of documents from the archives of the Foreign Office on British foreign policy during the period 1919-39 ... The Collection, as first planned, was divided into two Series, of which the first Series opened after the signature of the Treaty of Versailles and the second in the year 1930. In order to make available as soon as possible documents dealing with events most relevant to the outbreak of war in 1939, a third series has been added. "The present volume deals primarily with the financial crisis which spread from Germany and Austria in the early summer of 1931 and appeared likely to cause a general collapse. The documents printed in this volume describe the stages in the crisis and the efforts made to avert disaster ... This volume also contains reports on the German political situation and on the visits of German ministers to London and of British ministers to Paris and Berlin. The last chapter describes the unsuccessful British efforts to find a way out of the deadlock in the Franco-Italian naval negotiations after the failutre of the latter Powers to reach a common interpretation of the Agreement of March, 1931." --From publisher's description

"The present volume begins with the announcement on March 9, 1938, of the decision of the Austrian Government to hold a plebiscite; the volume ends with the acceptance on July 23, 1938, by the Czechoslovak Government of the proposal that Lord Runciman should go on a special mission to Prague. Chapter I deals with the attitude of His Majesty's Government to the German invasion and annexation of Austria. [...] Chapter II covers the period from March 16 to April 16, when German intentions to intervene by force in the Sudeten question became increasingly clear. [...] Chapter III contains the record of the Anglo-French conversations of April 28-9. [...] Chapter IV covers the crisis of May 19-22, and the warning of His Majesty's Government to the German Government of the consequences of aggression. Chapter V takes the story to July 14, when the negotiations in Prague appeared to have reached a deadlock. [...] Chapter VI contains correspondence with the Czechoslovak Government over this proposal, which the latter accepted on July 23." --From publisher's description

This volume is thus the sequel to the two previous volumes which contain the minutes of meetings of the Allied Supreme Council in western Europe, usually at Paris, during this period."--Page iii
