14 editions published between 2005 and 2013 in English and Italian and held by 1,122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Journalist Garreau shows us that we are at an inflection point in history: we are engineering the next stage of human evolution. Through advances in genetics, robotics, information and nanotechnologies, we are altering our minds, our memories, our metabolisms, our personalities, our progeny--and perhaps our very souls. Taking us behind the scenes, Garreau reveals that superpowers--from revved-up reflexes and speed, to enhanced mental acuity and memory capabilities--already exist, or are in development in labs and research facilities. These enhancements will soon become part of our everyday lives. Will technology's promise to make us smarter, vanquish illness and extend our lives be the answer to our prayers? Or will unrestrained technology bring about the ultimate destruction of our species? With the insights of gifted thinkers and scientists who are making science fiction a reality, Garreau explores how these developments, in our lifetime, will affect everything from the way we date to the way we work, from how we think and act to how we fall in love

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Presented by Michio Kaku, this documentary looks at the prospects of a biomolecular revolution and to how, in the future, we might alter the future of humanity. Doctors can now not only diagnose illness but predict future possible diseases; Kaku visits a doctor who attempts to analyse his genome. We hear about treatmetns for conditions such as severe combined immunodeficiency, using genetically modified stem cells. However, cancers are caused not only by rogue genes but also by environmental factors; a project is underway to form a cancer genome atlas documenting every single genetic mutation in all known cancers. This kind of research is entirely dependent on the kind of calculations only super computers can make. However, how would the knowledge of our complete genetic determination affect us? Other areas covered are genetic manipulation of the ageing process, cloning, memory and physical enhancement. How will all these possibilities affect the future? Will we have a generation of designer children?
