"Elie Kedourie's classic study of the Middle East in modern times analyzes British failures in the region during the zenith of its power and influence. Mr. Kedourie attributes much of Britain's faulty and disastrous handling of Middle East problems to what he calls "the Chatham House version." It was a view of Middle Eastern history and politics propounded and propagated in the various publications of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (known popularly as Chatham House), written or edited by Arnold Toynbee. The episodes that Mr. Kedourie investigates show "successive and cumulative manifestations of illusion, misjudgment, maladroitness, and failure." Together they point up hard lessons for any outside power that would intervene in Middle Eastern affairs."--Jacket

Politics in the Middle East by Elie Kedourie( Book )

14 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 558 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Events in the Middle East have prompted many questions concerning the conflict between Islam and the European states which have, historically, been seen as a military and political challenge. Why has ideological politics triumphed in the Middle East? Why have attempts to form constitutional governments repeatedly failed in Islamic states?" "This new and authoritative account provides the historical analysis necessary for a clearer understanding of these questions." "In the nineteenth century Middle Eastern leaders believed that they could surmount the challenge posed by the European G̀reat Powers' by borrowing European weapons and technology, along with military and administrative organization, and, later, by adopting representative forms of government. These strategies proved a disappointment. The aftermath has been the establishment of military regimes, and an ideological style of politics, whether the ideology is nationalism or fundamentalism. This book describes and discusses the apparent success of ideological politics, and analyses its character."--Jacket
Afghani and 'Abduh; an essay on religious unbelief and political activism in modern Islam by Elie Kedourie( Book )

31 editions published between 1966 and 2013 in English and held by 533 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jamal al-Din al-Afghani (1838-1897) and his well-known Egyptian disciple Muhammad Abduh (1849-1905), the Mufti of Egypt and Lord Cromer's friend, have been generally considered pious and devoted Muslims who initiated the reform and rejuvenation of Islam after a stagnation of centuries. In this classic essay, reissued in hardback and paperback some thirty years after its first appearance, Elie Kedourie argues that Afghani and Abduh should be considered subverters rather than reformers of Islam. Kedourie addresses the spread of concealed unbelief and atheism in Muslim society towards the end of the nineteenth century, and shows how both Afghani and Abduh, while making a show of their piety, really held esoteric beliefs quite incompatible with orthodox and traditional Islam." "Professor Kedourie also discusses the two men's political activities in Egypt before and during Urabi's revolt and in the process throws new light on the parties and factions which were involved in Egyptian politics in the 1870s." --Book Jacket
