Maurice Durufle liet slechts een klein oeuvre na, waarvan het Requiem uit 1947 terecht populair is geworden. Zijn trage productie wordt vaak in verband gebracht met zijn introverte karakter en met zijn enorme zelfkritiek. Een vernieuwend componist kan hij evenmin worden genoemd. Hij bleef zijn leven lang vasthouden aan wereld die in zijn studietijd in de jaren '20 nog maar net als modern gold: het romantische impressionisme van Ravel en de vroege Debussy. Als jongetje leerde Durufle de schoonheid van het gregoriaans kennen op de koorschool in Rouen. Wat dat betreft was Tournemire zijn ideale orgelmeester, want deze wist als geen ander de bewegingsvrijheid en modale potentieel het gregoriaans om te zetten in bevlogen orgelmuziek. Gelukkig nam Durufle niet het rapsodische van zijn leermeester over. Van Vierne leerde Durufle een meer solide gevoel voor structuur en evenwicht
