Preparing for post-secondary education new roles for governments and families ( )
7 editions published between 2005 and 2008 in English and held by 1,075 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Based on information from a 1999 Statistics Canada national survey of 34,000 households, Preparing for Post-Secondary Education examines changes to national and international educational funding policies and the relationship between public and private costs. Contributors focus on the role of families in marshalling the necessary resources, demonstrating that access to post-secondary education is also determined by social capital. The authors conclude that new partnerships among parents, the state, and schools are redefining the various players' roles and commitments to the educational futures of Canadian children."--Jacket
The world in a city ( )
7 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 931 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The World in a City explores Toronto's ability to sustain a civic society in the face of profound demographic change. The essays in this collection highlight the need to pay more attention to certain at-risk groups and stress the importance of adapting policy to fit the changing settlement and clustering patterns of newcomers. Throughout the volume the concepts of social exclusion and integration are examined and employed to analyse the various challenges facing newcomers. The authors' research findings demonstrate that there are many obstacles to providing opportunity for immigrants, such as low resource bases and inadequate service delivery. Together the authors make a convincing case that by providing a level 'playing field' for its newly arrived inhabitants, and recognizing the particular needs of new communities, the city of Toronto can encourage social and economic growth that would be of immense benefit to the community as a whole."--BOOK JACKET
Opportunity and uncertainty life course experiences of the class of '73 ( )
6 editions published between 2000 and 2008 in English and held by 842 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Based on the longest-running survey of its kind in Canada, this book examines events in the lives of a generation of Ontario residents who graduated from grade twelve in 1973. The study recreates the world of the early 1970s in which these high school students faced the future. It recounts their educational and occupational experiences in the late 1970s, follows their vocational and career pathways during the subsequent decade, and searches for patterns in their personal and family lives through the late 1980s and early 1990s."--Jacket
