This is a collection of work housed in the Lenbachhaus in Munich of the artist's group, The Blue Rider, which became a symbol of revolution in modern art in the early 20th century. Their preoccupation was with abstraction, the forces and laws of nature, primitive art, and the role of colour. The work of Vassily Kadinsky, Franz Marc and Paul Klee have since become avant-garde icons known throughout the world. The Lenbachhaus possesses the world's finest collection of works by these artists and this volume brings together some 120 highlights
Vasily Kandinsky : a colorful life : the collection of the Lenbachhaus, Munich by Vivian Endicott Barnett( Book )

3 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 759 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Born in Russia, Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was one of the most original and influential artists to emerge in the twentieth century. He is known primarily for his daring use of color in startling non-objective works. Vasily Kandinsky: A Colorful Life is the most comprehensive and fully illustrated account to date of his early work, from 1900 to 1914, the period in which he made his radical shift to abstraction - and in so doing altered the very concept of art itself. The works presented here are from the collection of the city museum of Munich, or Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus. They were given to the Galerie in 1957 by the artist Gabriele Munter, who was Kandinsky's companion from 1903 to the beginning of World War I. They are being shown at the Galerie in their entirety for the first time in a major exhibition, for which this book serves as the catalogue. In compelling, readable text that draws on the latest research, noted Kandinsky expert Vivian Endicott Barnett illuminates the life and work of the artist. She begins with sketches made during his student years in Munich and considers also his interest in folk art, myths and fairy tales, the small oil studies from nature, medieval scenes, woodcuts, glass paintings and landscapes he made before progressing to the first abstractions. Included as well are the important paintings from the series of Improvisations, Impressions, and Compositions, which are among the highlights of his involvement with the Blue Rider group, and later works from his Bauhaus and Paris years. This sumptuous book includes more than 700 examples of Kandinsky's early genius, most of them brilliantly reproduced in full color. The works are organized chronologically, and paintings are accompanied, when relevant, by preliminary sketches and prints."--Jacket
Franz Marc : the retrospective by Franz Marc( Book )

5 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 650 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Contains a biography of nineteenth-century German Expressionist painter Franz Marc, and provides critical analyses, along with over three hundred reproductions and photographs, of his works
Kandinsky by Wassily Kandinsky( Book )

5 editions published in 2009 in French and English and held by 577 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents abstract Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). It reproduces scores of recently rediscovered paintings that had languished for decades in Soviet museums and in private collections. The author provides new details on Kandinsky's life and art, discussing his little-known experimental stage plays which strove for a synthesis of all the arts, and his friendships with Paul Klee, Arnold Schonberg and composer Thomas von Hartmann, who introduced the artist to Sufism, the mystical offshoot of Islam. Most chapters include excerpts from Kandinsky's newspaper articles, essays and unpublished letters, creating the impression of a tolerant nonconformist who saw art as inseparably linked with the higher laws of the cosmos. The reproductions provide an exciting glimpse of Kandinsky's leap into abstraction after his early absorption of folk and religious art, fauvism and neo-impressionism
Hans Hofmann by Helmut Friedel( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 564 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

They richly represent his unique painting style, which conveys a deeply personal experience of color that has lost none of its power to fascinate the viewer
