This is a collection of work housed in the Lenbachhaus in Munich of the artist's group, The Blue Rider, which became a symbol of revolution in modern art in the early 20th century. The work of Vassily Kadinsky, Franz Marc and Paul Klee have since become avant-garde icons known throughout the world. The Lenbachhaus possesses the world's finest collection of works by these artists and this volume brings together some 120 highlights
Vasily Kandinsky : a colorful life : the collection of the Lenbachhaus, Munich by Vivian Endicott Barnett( Book )

7 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 758 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Born in Russia, Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was one of the most original and influential artists to emerge in the twentieth century. He is known primarily for his daring use of color in startling non-objective works. Vasily Kandinsky: A Colorful Life is the most comprehensive and fully illustrated account to date of his early work, from 1900 to 1914, the period in which he made his radical shift to abstraction - and in so doing altered the very concept of art itself. The works presented here are from the collection of the city museum of Munich, or Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus. They were given to the Galerie in 1957 by the artist Gabriele Munter, who was Kandinsky's companion from 1903 to the beginning of World War I. They are being shown at the Galerie in their entirety for the first time in a major exhibition, for which this book serves as the catalogue. In compelling, readable text that draws on the latest research, noted Kandinsky expert Vivian Endicott Barnett illuminates the life and work of the artist. She begins with sketches made during his student years in Munich and considers also his interest in folk art, myths and fairy tales, the small oil studies from nature, medieval scenes, woodcuts, glass paintings and landscapes he made before progressing to the first abstractions. Included as well are the important paintings from the series of Improvisations, Impressions, and Compositions, which are among the highlights of his involvement with the Blue Rider group, and later works from his Bauhaus and Paris years. This sumptuous book includes more than 700 examples of Kandinsky's early genius, most of them brilliantly reproduced in full color. The works are organized chronologically, and paintings are accompanied, when relevant, by preliminary sketches and prints."--Jacket
Franz Marc : the retrospective by Franz Marc( Book )

Kandinsky by Wassily Kandinsky( Book )

13 editions published in 2009 in French and English and held by 615 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents abstract Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). It reproduces scores of recently rediscovered paintings that had languished for decades in Soviet museums and in private collections. The author provides new details on Kandinsky's life and art, discussing his little-known experimental stage plays which strove for a synthesis of all the arts, and his friendships with Paul Klee, Arnold Schonberg and composer Thomas von Hartmann, who introduced the artist to Sufism, the mystical offshoot of Islam. Most chapters include excerpts from Kandinsky's newspaper articles, essays and unpublished letters, creating the impression of a tolerant nonconformist who saw art as inseparably linked with the higher laws of the cosmos. The reproductions provide an exciting glimpse of Kandinsky's leap into abstraction after his early absorption of folk and religious art, fauvism and neo-impressionism
Hans Hofmann by Helmut Friedel( Book )

6 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 568 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

They richly represent his unique painting style, which conveys a deeply personal experience of color that has lost none of its power to fascinate the viewer

Atlas by Gerhard Richter( Book )

11 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and German and held by 292 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This monumental publication maps the ideas, processes, life and times of one of the most important painters of the late twentieth century. Having left East Germany in 1961, where he had already established a reputation as a Realist painter, Gerhard Richter went on to attend the Dusseldorf Academy, striking out on a radical new path and changing the history of painting as he looked to photography for a way to release painting from the political and symbolic burdens of Socialist Realism and Abstract Expressionism." "Conceived and closely edited by Gerhard Richter himself, Atlas cuts straight to the heart of the artist's work, presenting the photographs, drawings and sketches that he has compiled or created since the moment of his creative breakthrough in 1962. From pictures of family and friends to images from the mass media, Richter's photographs - sometimes found, sometimes original - have provided the basis for many of his paintings, often re-emerging in a luminous, monochromatic palette, and falling ambiguously between documentary and historical painting. The images closely parallel, year by year, the subjects of Richter's paintings, revealing the orderly but open-ended analysis that has been so central to his art. Offering invaluable insight into Richter's working process, this monumental new edition, which completely revises and updates the rare, out-of-print 1997 edition, features 783 multi-image sheets, each reproduced full page and in full color."--Jacket

Mondrian, De Stijl by Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus München( Book )

10 editions published in 2011 in German and Multiple languages and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the exception of the Bauhaus, probably no other art movement of the first half of the twentieth century has had such an influence on our everyday lives as the De Stijl group around Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. Mondrian, along with Wassily Kandinsky and Kasimir Malevich one of abstract painting's founding fathers, created strictly geometrical paintings that today are icons of modernism. Their characteristic structure - a black frame with fields of primary colours and white - has long assumed a life of its own in art and fashion, advertising and popular culture. One focus of the publication ... is Mondrian's development towards abstraction - from his early works in the circle of the neo-impressionist luminists to his neoplasticistic period. A second focus is De Stijl's interdisciplinary approach, which will be shown with historical furniture, clothes, architectural drawings and models."--Jacket
