"Inspiration - the factor common to all composers throughout musical history, in whatever period or place they have worked, whatever style they have embraced; yet never before has it been the subject of study. Here, one of Britain's foremost composers, Jonathan Harvey, draws widely on the writings of many composers in an effort to understand and define what inspiration really is. His choice of material is wide-ranging, aiming to chart what it is that composers from different backgrounds have in common and how the concept of inspiration persists within otherwise very different musical cultures."--Jacket

In quest of spirit : thoughts on music by Jonathan Harvey( Recording )

10 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 270 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Harvey explores aspects of music that he connects with spirituality: self-identity, ambiguity, unity, stasis, and silence. In the course of his explorations he offers corroborating statements about music and spirituality from sources ranging from Nietzsche to Oliver Sacks. The book and CD include samples of his own music as well as of compositions by Mozart, Scriabin, Stockhausen, and others that help to illustrate the profoundness of what Harvey deems "the good listening experience."

Collected writings by Brian Ferneyhough( Book )

6 editions published between 1995 and 2003 in English and held by 203 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Given the fact that his music is being heard with increasing frequency both on CDs and at new music festivals throughout the world, it is somewhat of an understatement to say that Brian Ferneyhough's reputation as a composer is certainly not in need of bolstering. Until now, however, Ferneyhough's writings about music, although numerous, have appeared in various languages, widely scattered and difficult, if not impossible, to find. The present collection brings together the majority of the composer's extant writings, many of them appearing here in English for the first time, along with some edited transcripts of informal talks, and a number of major interviews. Although the vast majority of the texts deal with Ferneyhough's compositions, there are others which reflect his activities as a highly influential composition teacher, and some which touch on his recent work as a poet. Together, the writings provide a fascinating and engaging means of insight into the workings of the mind of a composer whose output could be regarded as one of the most significant of this century
