Woman's place; options and limits in professional careers by Cynthia Fuchs Epstein( Book )

28 editions published between 1970 and 1973 in English and German and held by 1,191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author contends that, despite the struggle for equal participation with men in all social and economic spheres, most American women have not adequately exploited their rights and talents. Beginning with a survey of the cultural themes and values that profoundly affect how women's career decisions are made, she gives detailed attention to the socialization process from which individuals derive their self-identity and the sense of personal limits and options. Six major categories of role conflict are then identified and discussed, each deriving from the ambiguities and contradictions associated with being both a female and a professional. Paths and obstacles to the reconciliation of such conflicts are described, along with effects which typically follow from such decisions as marriage or childbirth. Finally, different professions (including law, medicine, engineering, and teaching) are examined in terms of how women's participation is shaped by structural factors, behavioral norms, and tendencies toward change in each field. Problems encountered by poor women--a major part of the work force--are also touched on. (Ly)

"In Fighting for Time, editors Cynthia Fuchs Epstein and Arne L. Kalleberg bring together a team of distinguished sociologists and management analysts to examine the social construction of time and its importance in American culture." "Fighting for Time challenges assumptions about the relationship between time and work, revealing that time is a fluid concept that derives its importance from cultural attitudes, social psychological processes, and the exercise of power. Its insight will be of interest to sociologists, economists, social psychologists, business leaders, and anyone interested in the work-life balance."--Jacket

Reflections on the women's movement : an assessment of change and its limits by Cynthia Fuchs Epstein( Book )

3 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recent changes in the social and economic roles of women are examined. These changes affect the lives of the largest single group in the United States and have resulted from a movement aimed not only at increased access to society's resources and power, but also at a redefinition of the identity of American women. Topics reviewed include women in the labor force, entry into male-dominated occupations and professions, competence and criteria, consequences of women's movement on professional and occupational practice, apprenticeship, minority women, women and education, women and money, women and politics, changes in the family structure, fertility, changing living arrangements, pressures on the family, and child care. The emphasis of this report is on economic changes because it is an important area in defining women's equality. Access to occupational opportunities has given women significant leverage in politics, as well as in the home. Their attitudes toward work have stimulated new versions about marriage and family life.
