15 editions published between 1999 and 2010 in English and held by 1,259 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The name Florence Nightingale conjures up a romantic image of "the lady with a lamp" who founded modern nursing. However, this image trivializes the accomplishments and character of one of the most remarkable women of the 19th century. Few people are aware that Nightingale was a trailblazing social activist and visionary whose ideas on such matters as public health and sanitation, holistic health, and women's place in society were decades ahead of their time." "Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary, Healer reveals the many facets of this complex, brilliant woman, including her little-known but fascinating mystical side, which inspired all of her achievements, and her early support of the Indian nationalist movement."--Jacket

Best known as the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale was also a trailblazer in health science and health statistics, philosophy, political advocacy and reform, environmentalism, evidence-based practice, feminism, holistic nursing, nursing theory, and public health. Her far-reaching legacy is still relevant to modern day healthcare issues. Three renowned holistic nurse scholars join the director of the Florence Nightingale Museum to present a portrait of this remarkable woman. Interpreting Nightingale's life and work by the principles of healing, leadership, and global action, the authors identify and discuss the ways in which her work, both practical and visionary, can yet rejuvenate nurses, nursing, and health care worldwide. ... Letters from a mystic : Florence Nightingale's legacy for postmodern nursing by Barbara Montgomery Dossey( Book )

3 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This PDE study was an interpretive biography that explored Florence Nightingale's (1820--1910) vision of healing. The primary sources analyzed in this study were Nightingale's 13 formal letters (also called addresses) written to her nurses from 1872 to 1900. Additional primary and secondary sources were also used in the interpretive biographical process. These 13 letters contain Nightingale's self-narratives and multiply stories within stories. From these letters, Nightingale's Notes on Nursing (1860a, 1860b), Suggestions for Thought (1860c), "Sick Nursing and Health Nursing" (1893), and my previous research on Nightingale's life and work, I was able to make new connections and links between Nightingale to postmodern nursing. My scholarly contributions with this study were socially relevant for two reasons. The first is that nursing shows signs of losing its soul and is in crisis due to the current state of managed care and the nursing shortage, to name just two causes of the problem. Secondly, Nightingale's profound contributions for postmodern nursing are quite frequently trivialized, and superficial interpretation of her life and work continues. This PDE provides the groundedness--the foundation--on which nurses' core values and human potential can be enhanced in order to engage in the depth of the art and science of nursing. Nightingale's message as uncovered in this PDE explores new meaning, structure, and richness that have significant implications and relevance for postmodern nursing and society
