L'altération des sentiments amoureux est décrite en quatre temps : 1) préparation, par des détails d'attitudes, de lettres, de dialogues; 2) description rapide et brutale; 3) résumé de la situation des protagonistes en une formule frappante; 4) passage du particulier au général, exprimé en une réflexion abstraite. Le monde d'"Adolphe" est surtout mental, mais on a sous-estimé l'importance des détails physiques, jamais décrits gratuitement : voix, yeux, respiration, nature. Le placement judicieux des mots, la construction rhétorique des phrases exactement adaptée à chaque personnage sont les grandes forces du style d'"Adolphe"

Analyse : Les personnages secondaires d'"Adolphe" sont généralement présentés comme des faire-valoir du héros principal. Or Constant a créé dans son roman des personnages secondaires cohérents, convaincants et singuliers. Ellénore, souvent décrite comme un "patchwork" des femmes qui ont traversé la vie de Constant, ou comme une abstraction composite de ses idées sur les femmes, est mieux que cela : elle possède des qualités individuelles, féminines, sociales qui, loin d'être gratuites, prennent leur place dans une combinatoire psychologique implacable. Les autres personnages aussi possèdent leur individualité : le père du héros, le Baron de T.... Ces personnages,, dans leurs jugements de la conduite d'Adolphe, n'entrevoient jamais que des demi-vérités; à travers eux, Constant réexamine les idées préconçues qui ont cours, entre autres, sur l'amour, les femmes, l'ambition, le dévouemement
