Hacia 1920, el crítico literario Francisco de Icaza publicó este estudio biográfico de Lope de Vega, basándose en uno de los aspectos más relevantes de su personalidad: su extraordinaria y prolija vida amorosa. Tan apasionado amante, Lope fue igualmente un hombre capaz de profundos rencores y de una devoción filial sin paralelo. Por otro lado, Icaza también analiza el concepto de arte propio de Lope, su cultura y su alma. El libro tiene el mérito de examinar los textos de las oraciones fúnebres y de las biografías publicadas tras la muerte del poeta, y de extraer de ellos un retrato veraz de uno de los escritores más prolíficos de la lengua española
