Dismantling communism : common causes and regional variations by Gilbert Rozman( Book )

6 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 472 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

By the late 1980s communism had begun to crumble in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Yet today, the fate of communism throughout the world is far from certain. As former communist nations continue to undergo dramatic change in the 1990s, it is becoming apparent that the road away from communism is not a smooth path from Marxism to capitalism but one that may lead to different and quite unexpected destinations. Dismantling Communism takes a close look at the long-term forces of change and reform in communist countries. Stepping back from the optimists' giddy proclamations of Cold War "victory" as well as from the pessimists' warning that communism could rise again, the book presents two comparative approaches to analyzing the transformation of communism. The first approach is regional, stressing the commonalities and differences that exist among communist nations and states in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, China, and Asia. Other chapters use a topical approach to explore the causes and pattern of transformation. Dismantling Communism is a timely look at the dizzying events that are reshaping the modern world. Its authors, experts on communism from a variety of fields and disciplines, provide insightful analysis and reasoned judgments. Their aim is not to predict the outcome of the transformation of communism throughout the world, but to suggest the significance reform will have in remaking the world community of the twenty-first century

China's dramatic economic growth since the 1970s has seemed inexorable. The resulting rise in international profile has provoked a lively argument regarding the fundamental economic and strategic challenges to the rest of the world that China now presents. China Rising examines the extent to which that country's future foreign policy stance may be shaped by its own agendas and constrained through interdependence and interaction with the outside world. In the process it also questions the extent to which the rest of the world can attempt to shape that future to non-Chinese interests

"Gerald Segal, a world specialist on Asia, was a prolific writer, including on China's role in world politics. Before he died in 1999 the journal Foreign Affairs published his article 'Does China Matter?'." "Expanding on Segal's theme, this volume gathers together ten leading writers on China to reassess his argument. This book opens with a discussion of Dr. Segal's contribution to scholarship on Asia, and also reprints the 1999 article. The authors then address the question 'does China matter?' by examining both the global and Asian dimensions of China's presence in the military, political, economic and cultural fields." "These essays provide an extension and critique of Segal's work, and represent an authoritative evaluation of China's current policies and future prospects. The question 'does China matter?' remains central to world politics. This book sets out a detailed case for exactly how, why and to whom it matters."--BOOK JACKET
