"Jean-Louis Ferrier's highly original interpretation offers us a new point of entrance into Paul Klee's playful, mysterious world. Of the artist's corpus of 8,926 works, 140 are illustrated here. Born into a family of musicians, Klee long hesitated between painting and the violin, and music remained a major source of inspiration. His quest to geometrize the subject and his work on materials, line and colour proved seminal. He began teaching at the Bauhaus in 1920, making a major contribution to the development of the visual arts. To this distinguished teaching career we owe his celebrated theoretical works, notably the Pedagogical Sketch Book."--Jacket

Outsider Art deals with the twin themes of art brut and psychiatric art and takes us to the very source of the creative act. But what is psychiatric art? How do we define art brut? In what way can both be distinguished from "cultural" art? And why do we find such works perpetually challenging? The author sets out to answer questions such as these by presenting and analyzing the agonized, reconstructed world of more than thirty artists ranging from nowadays famous names like Wolfli or Aloise to lesser known figures of equally astonishing talent

Picasso invites the reader to set aside preconceived ideas before exploring the work of one of the 20th century's greatest and most influential artists, and to relive one of the most profound revolutions in pictorial art. By the age of twenty, Pablo Picasso had produced over a thousand paintings and drawings, but his first critical success came in 1907 at the age of twenty-six when he created his famous Les demoiselles d"Avignon. Notables in the Paris art world were too shocked to express disapproval; never before had they seen such a crude transformation of reality. As a painter, Picasso questioned, transformed, and ultimately disfigured the material world surrounding him, giving birth to a new era in art. His talent is illuminated in this complete survey with 120 brilliant full-color illustrations and 25 b/w documents that span from 1896 to 1972, from his class portraits and still-lifes as a young artist, to his outrageous masterpieces in cubism and realism, and also including his sculpture and ceramic art. Picasso is an outstanding contribution to an complete understanding of the man and his work

An atypical artist like Paul Klee occupies a prominent place among the great founders of the painting of our time. On the sidelines of the main currents of twentieth-century art his work is a richness, variety and continual invention; Indeed , throughout his life, Paul Klee diversify its sources of inspiration and themes using different techniques. Until the least of his watercolors and drawings fastest manifest the strength and mystery of his art. What constitutes its originality, it is above all a demanding approach to reality, which was, in his eyes, the technical enigma
