Sociolegal control of homosexuality : a multi-nation comparison by D. J West( )

19 editions published between 1997 and 2010 in English and held by 1,732 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sociolegal Control of Homosexuality, the most complete and up-to-date treatment of the subject, includes information from areas that are not often covered in English-language publications. Its examination of the sociological, historical, and philosophical trends in the attitudes of 20 nations toward male and female homosexuality includes diverse sampling of legislation, both proscriptive and liberal, in a variety of nations; effects of the rise of fundamentalist religious movements on homosexuals; relevance of new scientific information regarding biological factors in sexual orientation; and revolutionary moves against discrimination in countries once known as repressive, such as South Africa and Russia." "This interdisciplinary, cross-cultural survey, copiously detailed and referenced, will be of interest to lawyers, social scientists, psychologists, sex researchers, criminologists, and social psychiatrists, as well as students in academic courses that touch upon any of these fields."--Jacket

15 editions published between 1969 and 1991 in English and held by 509 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Transsexualism and Sex Reassignment had its origins in the advisory board meetings of the Henry Benjamin Foundation. In the earliest stages, it was discussed as a volume that would embody the findings of the research group working directly under the auspices of the Foundation. it soon became evident that such a limitation would make the book unnecessarily parochial. It would, for example, have excluded those patients who were treated and operated at the newly constituted John Hopkins Gender Identity Clinic and who were not also patients in the Harry Benjamin Foundation research study, as well as the important body of work being done elsewhere, especially in Europe

Dr. Money and the boy with no penis( Visual )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This is the story of David Reimer, one of two twin boys named Bruce and Brian, who was born in Canada in the 1960's. Catastrophically for his entire family as well as himself, his penis was burnt off in a botched circumcision operation when he was still a tiny baby. The parents were both traumatised by this event and in a dilemma about their son's future when they saw psychologist Dr. John Money being interviewed about sex change operations on national television. They contacted Money and he recommended they raise David as a girl, so between the ages of 2-14 David was known as Brenda. Brenda then became an inspiration for the two books on gender that were to make Money's career. This documentary looks at the effects of this decision on the life of David and his family. Much attention is paid to Money's likely manipulation of the truth of the success of David's sex change, as well as his inability to acknowledge the 'experiment' was failing - the programme includes dramatic reconstructions of some of the psychologically draining sessions David was forced to endure with Dr. Money. There are also (mostly archival) interviews with David, his father, his mother and twin brother who went on to become a schizophrenic. Tragically David committed suicide in May this year
