An adaptation of the Cinderella story. The story is the familiar fairy tale but with the fairy element left out. In place of the fairy godmother, we have Alidoro, a philosophic person and friend of the Prince. The glass slipper is replaced with a pair of bracelets. One of these bracelets is given to the Prince at the ball and recognition of the other leads to the customary happy ending

The clash between two queens, with the throne of England at stake, is at the center of Donizetti's bel canto drama. Sondra Radvanovsky, in the second part of her historic traversal of all three of the composer's Tudor queen operas in one season, stars in the title role of the Catholic Mary, Queen of Scots. Her opponent is Queen Elizabeth I, sung by Elza van den Heever, as the Protestant ruler who knows her position is not secure as long as Mary lives. Tenor Celso Albelo is George Talbot, the Earl of Leicester and favorite of the queen, who urges her to reconcile with Mary. But when Mary insults Elizabeth, her tragic fate is sealed. Kwangchul Youn as Talbot and Patrick Carfizzi as Cecil complete the principal cast, and Riccardo Frizza conducts

Mozart's magical fairy tale has enchanted and moved audiences for more than 200 years--which is easy to understand after hearing this broadcast, brilliantly conducted by James Levine. The handsome, stalwart prince Tamino (Francisco Araiza) must fight supernatural forces to rescue the beautiful princess (Kathleen Battle) with whom he has fallen in love--after seeing only her portrait. But Tamino is in a strange land and doesn't know whom he can trust, including Sarastro (Kurt Moll), the leader of a mysterious noble order

René Pape's swaggering Mephistophélès is as seductive as it is demonic in this story of Faust (Roberto Alagna) who sells his soul to the devil to reclaim his youth. Wasting no time, Faust falls in love with Marguerite (Solie Isokoski) but things soon begin to go horribly wrong. Her brother (Dmitri Hvorostovvsky) is murdered, she goes insane, and Faust is dragged to hell. But the music is unforgettable
Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart( )

18 editions published between 1983 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 511 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

ATMA Classique is reissuing one of Les Violons du Roy's seminal discs: the orchestra's recording of Mozart's Requiem as revised and completed by Robert D. Levin. The soloists are Karina Gauvin, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, John Tessier, and Nathan Berg. Bernard Labadie conducts Les Violons du Roy and the choir of La Chapelle de Québec. This recording was originally released on the Dorian label in 2002, and won the JUNO Award for Best Classical Album of the year in the vocal or choral performance category. This recording of Mozart's Requiem is especially poignant, as it was made in Troy, NewYork in the week following the September 11 attacks in 2001.The recording captures the emotion and immediacy of that special performance, which was later featured on CBC Television's Opening Night. The Globe & Mail wrote about "an appreciation of the transcendent aspects of the Requiem as a work of art that is about death, survival and the possibility of an afterlife. There is the magnificence of the music, so often used to solemnly mark terrible tragedy and bring solace."

Das Lied von der Erde by Gustav Mahler( )

25 editions published between 1984 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 501 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

17 editions published between 1990 and 2008 in German and Undetermined and held by 393 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner said this early-Romantic gem was the most German of German operas. Its irresistible mix of colorful folklore, the spooky supernatural, a tender romance, and the passionate struggle between good and evil are all captured in Weber's tuneful and dramatic score. The cast in this rare U.S. performance is sensational: Sándor Kónya as our hero, the forester Max, who must win a shooting contest in order to marry his beloved Agathe (the ravishing Pilar Lorengar), despite the dark plotting of Caspar (Gerd Feldhoff)
