Symphony no. 9 by
Anton Bruckner(
)
16 editions published between 2001 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 923 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In January 2014, music lovers worldwide were saddened to learn of the death of conductor Claudio Abbado. Deutsche Grammophon feels immensely blessed and proud to be releasing, together with Accentus Music, Bruckner 's Symphony no. 9 in D minor, which was recorded as part of Abbado's final concert. The concert received very positive reviews from the press: "Mr. Abbado led an otherworldly account of Bruckner's 9th Symphony. Never have I heard as magisterial and moving performance of the work as that given by the 80-year-old maestro and his fabulous Lucerne Festival Orchestra" (Wall Street Journal). The concert was recorded by Accentus Music during the 75th Lucerne Festival in 2013 with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, and this release is a fitting tribute to an irreplaceable artist, who was one of the greatest conductors and most inspiring musical figures of our time. With this record, Deutsche Grammophon and Accentus Music wish to pay tribute to the maestro and honour what would have been his 81st birthday on June 26, 2014

Star conductor Simon Rattle leads a superb cast in this mesmerizing performance of Debussy's rarely staged opera. Stéphane Degout and Magdalena Kožená are the tragic title couple--lovers caught in a web of passion as strong as it is forbidden. Gerald Finley delivers a remarkable portrayal of Golaud, Mélisande's husband and Pelléas's half-brother, and Felicity Palmer is their mother, Geneviève. Willard White brings dramatic and vocal intensity to the brief but crucial role of the blind old king Arkel

The role of Simon Boccanegra is one of the capstones of Verdi's baritone repertoire. Sherrill Milnes gives a stunning portrayal of the 14th century Genoa doge, singing with both power and poetry, and reminding everyone why audiences acclaimed him the great American Verdi baritone of the day. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is Amelia, his long-lost daughter, in love with one of Boccanegra's most bitter political enemies. James Levine reveals his passion for Verdi's score, bringing out all the drama while reveling in its aching lyricism
