"In this complete studio recording of a newly prepared critical edition -- the first on period instruments -- Giovanni Antonini and Cecilia Bartoli reveal Norma's authentic pre-Romantic roots and return to Bellini's original conception. The role of Norma was written for Giuditta Pasta, who sang what today's listeners would consider to be mezzo-soprano roles, while Adalgisa was conceived for a light silvery soprano. With Cecilia Bartoli and Sumi Jo heard here for the first time on record together, this iconic opera has been restored as Bellini originally intended."--Container

One of the absolute highlights of her extraordinary career, Maria Callas' 1957 performances of this Donizetti opera brought new life to a bel canto opera that had long fallen out of favor. The central role was ideally suited to her talents and she once again had Luchino Viscontias her director. Anna's rival, Giovanna Seymour, was sung by one of Callas' most trusted colleagues, the superb mezzo-soprano Giulietta Simionato

A temple virgin, Adalgisa, is young and beautiful. Pollione must have her. He has importuned the young virgin to run away with him to Rome, and she has finally agreed. When Norma learns of Pollione's faithlessness, she threatens to kill the two children. Before she can do this, the Druid temple priests apprehend Pollione as he attempts to abscond with their sacred virgin, Adalgisa. The priests build a pyre to burn Pollione to death. Norma relents. Instead of killing the children, she blames herself for her misery and climbs onto the pyre to die with Pollione

Lucrezia Borgia by Gaetano Donizetti( )

68 editions published between 1965 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 1,812 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Based on Victor Hugo's most sensational play, 'Lucrece Borgia', a scandalous tale of murder, torture, incest, homosexuality, drunkenness and orgies, Donizetti's opera is one of the great masterpieces of Italian 'bel canto' repertoire. While omitting some of its more excessive elements, the libretto by Felice Romani inspired Donizetti to compose superb arias, duets, ensembles and choruses, bringing each act to a stirring conclusion. Brimming with high drama and pathos, this production stars Greek diva Dimitra Theodossiou in the infamous title role, praised for her stupendous acting and singing as England's Queen Elizabeth I in Donizetti's 'Roberto Devereux'
