Pollione, a Roman Proconsul, has two children by Norma, a Druid priestess, in the course of a long relationship. Norma isn't as young and beautiful as once she was. A temple virgin, Adalgisa, is young and beautiful. Pollione must have her. He has importuned the young virgin to run away with him to Rome, and she has finally agreed. When Norma learns of Pollione's faithlessness, she threatens to kill the two children. Before she can do this, the Druid temple priests apprehend Pollione as he attempts to abscond with their sacred virgin, Adalgisa. The priests build a pyre to burn Pollione to death. Norma relents. Instead of killing the children, she blames herself for her misery and climbs onto the pyre to die with Pollione

La Sonnambula by Vincenzo Bellini( )

204 editions published between 1930 and 2017 in 6 languages and held by 4,311 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"La Sonnambula" (The Sleepwalker) was first produced at the Teatro Careano, Milan, in March 1831. The libretto, by Romani, the foremost Italian librettist of the time, sets forth a rather childish if simple and natural story of lowly life in a Swiss village. The heroine, Amina, is a rustic damsel who walks in her sleep. Rodolfo, the young lord of the village, has just returned from abroad, and Amina, in her sleep, enters his room at the inn. Amina's wedding to Elvino, a wealthy landowner, was just about to be celebrated. But now the jealous Lisa, the pretty hostess of the inn, denounces Amina, and herself gains the temporary regard of Elvino. Rodolfo proclaims Amina's innocence, but nobody believes him until Amina is seen walking in her sleep, this time over a slim bridge above the mill-wheel. Her innocence is thus confirmed, and the conventional happy ending is assured

Lucrezia Borgia by Gaetano Donizetti( )

59 editions published between 1965 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 1,619 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Based on Victor Hugo's most sensational play, 'Lucrece Borgia', a scandalous tale of murder, torture, incest, homosexuality, drunkenness and orgies, Donizetti's opera is one of the great masterpieces of Italian 'bel canto' repertoire. While omitting some of its more excessive elements, the libretto by Felice Romani inspired Donizetti to compose superb arias, duets, ensembles and choruses, bringing each act to a stirring conclusion. Brimming with high drama and pathos, this production stars Greek diva Dimitra Theodossiou in the infamous title role, praised for her stupendous acting and singing as England's Queen Elizabeth I in Donizetti's 'Roberto Devereux'
