American paintings at the High Museum of Art by High Museum of Art( Book )

5 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Atlanta's High Museum of Art came into being through Mrs. Joseph M. High's 1926 gift to the city of her Peachtree Street home. In 1949 J. J. Haverty's daughter Mary E. Haverty bequeathed to the museum the Haverty collection of paintings, which included many outstanding American works of the early twentieth century. Today the museum's fine collection of American art includes nearly two hundred paintings and watercolors, ranging from a 1753 portrait by Jeremiah Theus to the 1929-30 Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by Henry Ossawa Tanner, an African-American protege of Thomas Eakins." "This lavish volume presents seventy-eight paintings by sixty-four artists in oversize colorplates with comprehensive documentation and individual essays that place the works in the context of their creators' lives and careers. Among the notable examples are works from the eighteenth century by Copley and Earl; from the nineteenth by Bierstadt, Blakelock, Cole, Cropsey, Doughty, Harnett, Heade, Inness, Kensett, Moran, the Peales, Peto, Prendergast, Sargent, Sully, and Whittredge; and from the twentieth by Bellows, Cassatt, Chase, Glackens, Hassam, Henri, Luks, and Sloan."--BOOK JACKET

Graphic arts & the South : proceedings of the 1990 North American Print Conference by Georgie) North American Print Conference$ (1990 : Atlanta( Book )

3 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the formation of the United States came the need for visual images that would embody the spirit of individuality and the distinctive character of the American experiment in democracy. The prints, photographs, illustrations, and drawings in Graphic Arts & the South recreate those images, introducing the reader to the special lore of the southern part of the nation - its mysteries, its pain, and its continuing struggle to evolve. Many nineteenth-century prints and illustrations depict a South that never existed, yet these images dominated the media and took on the semblance of reality as white Southerners assimilated the myth. As Sue Rainey points out in "Images of the South in Picturesque America and The Great South":. The wood engravings... were based on on-the-spot drawings; the artist's direct confrontation with his subject matter lends an immediacy to the illustrations and a sense that these are truthful representations. Yet, ...each series was made up of carefully selected and shaped depictions of the post-war South, corresponding to the intentions of the authors and the publishers and the preferences of the artists. And there was much they chose not to record. From David Tatham's "The Half Horse-Half Alligator and Other Southern Members of the Jacksonian Bestiary" to Jessie Poesch's "David Hunter Strother: Mountain People, Mountain Images," this collection of essays and graphic arts gives shape and definition to the history and legacy of the Old South." -- Publisher

"This exhibition was conceived by Kathryn Davis on the occasion of her 100th birthday. It was her desire to give something she loved as a gift to the community - art created by women, both highly regarded and under-recognized - in order to generously share what is meaningful to her. Rather than presenting a comprehensive survey, the works included in this exhibition were selectd to reflect a personal delight in the work of women artists of the past century." -- Page 3
