A potter's book by Bernard Leach( Book )

22 editions published between 1940 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When potters throw clay onto a stone, they make a connection across centuries to ancient workshops. The techniques and traditions of these early craftsmen, especially those of China's Sung dynasty, still inform many of the pottery practices in use today, thanks to the seminal work of Bernard Leach. Leach's A Potter's Book was among the first to collect ancient workshop traditions for modern use in studios, emphasizing functional work. It became an immediate hit among potters who embraced its ideal of unity, spontaneity, and simplicity of form. Leach, considered the father of British studio pottery, went on to establish one of the most respected studios in the world with the ideas of A Potter's Book at its foundation. With this classic book, potters can learn everything, from how to set up their workshop to how to adapt pigment and glaze recipes to how to design custom kilns. It spotlights four types of pottery: Japanese raku, English slipware, stoneware, and oriental porcelain. Thanks to Leach's time in Japan and collaborations with master potter Shoji Hamada, it also serves as a fascinating look at the interplay between Eastern and Western art"--
That continuous thing : artists and the ceramics studio, 1920-today by GB) Tate Gallery (Saint Ives( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the rise of studio pottery in the 1910s to a number of new commissions by a young generation of UK-based artists, That Continuous Thing traces the changing shape of the ceramics studio over the last century, from the radical to the apparently traditional. Opening with exchange between Japan and the UK in 1910s and 1920s through the emergence of studio potters such as Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada and Dora Billington, the book leads on to the Californian "clay revolution" of the 1950s and 1960s, with sculptures by the pioneering artist Voulkos. The book also includes works by contemporary artists made over the last three years at Angell's London-based Troy Town Art Pottery, which has been described as "a radical and psychedelic workshop for artists."

Artisan et inconnu : la beauté dans l'esthétique japonaise by Muneyoshi Yanagi( Book )

6 editions published in 1992 in French and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Soetsu Yanagi : selected essays on Japanese folk crafts by Muneyoshi Yanagi( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The common utilitarian objects depicted in this book were considered aesthetically insignificant until the appearance of Soetsu Yanagi. It was Yanagi who discovered the beauty that could only be produced by simple, humble craftsmen repeatedly and unselfconsciously working on the same objects day after day. From this quotidian world emerged a distinctive beauty - wholesome, free, and devoid of self-awareness. To bring these crafts to the notice of the world, Yanagi established the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in 1936, from whose collection the objects illustrated herein have been chosen for inclusion by the publisher. In the essays, Yanagi expounds his philosophy of folk crafts and highlights particular pieces. Altogether, the book constitutes a penetrating insight into the world of Japanese handicrafts"--Publisher's website
