Training in utilizaton of surveillance and reconnaissance resources by combat arms officers by Robert A Vecchiotti ( Book )
3 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The purpose of this effort was to increase the effective use of aerial surveillance and reconnaissance (AS and R) resources by combat commanders through analysis of current experience and training and subsequent development of materials that may be used for training and field use. Contemporary training materials were analyzed for content. Questionnaires pertaining to experience with, attitudes toward, and training received relative to AS and R were distributed to students at pertinent schools, and the responses were analyzed for implications for training. Combat Arms students receive limited training in the use of AS and R resources, and they felt they could use more information in this area. The more experience with AS and R, the more favorable has been the experience with this resource. More emphasis should be placed on practical exercises that permit appropriate interaction with the capabilities of AS and R. The results of the analyses were used in the subsequent development of training materials and a field aid. (Author)

High heat flux actively cooled honeycomb sandwich structural panel for a hypersonic aircraft by L. C Koch ( Book )
2 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This report presents the results of a program to design and fabricate an unshielded actively cooled structural panel for a hypersonic aircraft. The design is an all-aluminum honeycomb sandwich with embedded cooling passages ordered to the inside of the outer moldline skin; the coolant is a 60/40 mixture of methanol/water. The panel was mass optimized to sustain 20000 cycles (5000 x scatter factor of 4) of + or - 210 kN/m (+/- 1200 lbf/in.) inplane loading combined with a 6.9 kPa (+/- 1.0 psi) uniform pressure while subjected to a 136 k W/m (12 BTU/ft(2) uniform beat flux. Six fatigue specimens, of critical panel areas, were fabricated by McDonnell Aircraft Company and tested (at room temperature) by NASA. A representative test panel was not fabricated because of problems with the plotting/soldering process. The overall finding is that an actively cooled structure appears feasible for application on a hypersonic aircraft, but the fabrication process is complex and some material and manufacturing technology developments are required. Results from the program are summarized in the body of the report and supporting details are presented in several appendices. (AN)

Study to improve airframe turbine engine rotor blade containment : final report : prepared for U.S. Dept. of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, Systems Research and Development Service by C. O Gunderson ( Book )
1 edition published in 1976 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
An evaluation was made of energies and trajectories for a range of fan, compressor, and turbine blade fragments from high bypass ratio fan engines for typical 3 and 4 engine wide body airplanes. The weight for local armor was established. The effects of fan blade fragment impacts for areas up to 30 deg forward of the fan plane of rotation were investigated. Tests using simulated titanium blade fragments and various inlet and nacelle materials were used to determine energy absorption capabilities. The effects of fragment impact angles, size, and rotation and penetration characteristics with steel and aluminum honeycomb; sheet steel; multiple steel layers; and Kevlar aramid fiber material containment systems were explored. Empirical and analytical armor weight determinations were verified by test. Estimates were made for the effect of added weight for airframe installed armor on fuel burned and fuel cost. In view of the adequacy of prevailing installation practices, further armor for the range of fragments considered would not appear to significantly enhance flight safety. While liberated fan blade fragments ahead of the engine do not affect the operation of remaining engines or jeopardize continued safety, they can produce undesirable secondary damage which should be considered in its own light with respect to local protection
